We keep on hearing that today the time demands specialists and not generalists. This holds for many fields of profession, which includes management as well. There is a misconception among the aspirants that opportunities are scarce when it comes to sector-specific management degrees and many don’t apply for it because they are not aware of it.

Below is the list of some institutes that give you the option of sector-specific MBAs. If you are someone who wants to something out of the box, then this repertoire is for you –


1. Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal


The Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal was established in the year 1982, it is a sectoral Management B-School which comes under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and climate change, Government of India. 

It offers two masters course viz. P.G.D.F.M. (Postgraduate Diploma in Forestry Management) and P.G.D.S.M. (Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainability Management). 

These are unique, MBA equivalent programs which allow students to further specialize in streams such as Development Management, Conservation, Livelihood Management, and Environmental Management. This institute accepts CAT and XAT scores for admission.


2. Institute of Rural Management, Anand 


The Institute of Rural Management, often referred to as IRMA is a sectoral B-School situated in Anand, Gujrat. It was founded by the legendary social entrepreneur Verghese Kurien, who also founded Amul. The main focus of this institute revolves around the streams such as Development Management, Rural, and Agribusiness. 

The Swiss Agency for Development and Corporation helped in the establishment of this institute and it received considerable cooperation from the Government of India as well. It is considered as one of the best institutes in India when it comes to the Rural sector. 

It accepts CAT and XAT scores for admissions, all the candidates are also required to appear for another examination conducted by the institute itself known as IRMASAT.


3. Mudra Institute of Communications (MICA), Ahmedabad


This B-school was established in the year 1991 with a focus on strategic marketing and communication. MICA offers two MBA equivalent Post Graduate programs, PGDM – C (Postgraduate diploma in Management – Communication) and PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management). T

his institute is the favorite recruiting ground for the companies operating in the area of advertising and corporate marketing. If you are a creative person willing to work in the Marketing and allied sectors, this place is for you. 

MICA accepts CAT, XAT and GMAT score for admissions and all the candidates are also required to appear in the MICAT examinations for final selection. 


4. National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad


National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, known as MANAGE, formerly National Centre for Management of Agricultural Extension at Hyderabad, is an autonomous institute that is located in Hyderabad city of Telangana. It comes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Government of India. 

This institute has a focus on training the students while keeping agri-business and the entire agriculture sector in mind. 

MANAGE offers three programs, Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Agri-Business Management) - PGDM(ABM), an online course on Post Graduate Diploma in Agri-Warehousing Management (P.G.D.A.W.M.) and Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Extension Management (P.G.D.A.E.M.). 

If you are interested in working and contributing in the rural and agricultural sectors, then you must consider this institute and these programs. MANAGE accepts the CAT score for admissions in its PGDM program.

Many other institutions provide specific sectoral programs but these were some of the less known B-Schools that are often ignored by candidates due to lack of information.
