Learning About Editing Software and Applications Is Definitely a Skill One Should Learn for After Effects - Alifiya Padghawala

You could work in an advertising firm as a product, lifestyle, or fashion photographer, as a travel photographer, as an interior/architectural photographer, or as a wedding/ event photographer to name a few. There are several branches in photography and each of them has something to offer.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am a 22-year old artist and an Interior Designer from Mumbai. I completed my three-year Diploma in Interior design in 2019 and am practicing it full-time. I like to use my immense love for aesthetics to create beautiful and pretty things. I have always loved to draw and paint. I do not follow a particular style of art and work on an idea that fascinates and inspires me. I also love to travel.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for photography?

To be honest, I do not have a vivid defining moment of realizing my passion for photography. It just happened in the flow of things. I am a creativity-driven person, a travel enthusiast and I also have immense love for aesthetics.

All of that combined ignited a spark within that I would like to document all that I create, the places I travel to, and things that I find pretty into photographs. That's how the passion was born, and I decided to dedicate my Instagram account to it.

3. What are some tips you would like to share with amateur photographers?

Being an amateur myself, I can share with you what I do. There are so many talented content creators that I follow on Instagram who post wonderful content. I take a lot of inspiration from them and on occasion set their posts on social media as a base for my creation.

It really helps. It is also important that one be patient with the art, and give enough time for trial and error and be open to making mistakes. Mistakes and errors help us mark our progress. As you keep practicing photography, you will be able to see the improvement yourself.

4. What are the important skills one should have to be a successful photographer in the future?

Being a creative art, an important skill to have, would be 'observation'. It is only when you observe a frame as a whole as well as pay attention to the details, can you create the perfect shot.

It is also important that you know your photography gear well. Learn about them through tutorials on YouTube or seek help from accomplished people from the field. Learning about editing software and applications like Lightroom, Photoshop, Snapseed, etc is definitely a skill one should learn for after effects.

If you have all of this in place, all you need now is the passion to drive you and success will come following.

5. According to you, what are various opportunities available for aspiring photographers?

There are loads of opportunities for people aspiring to become photographers. You could either work independently as a freelancer and take projects or join a team of photographers.

You could work in an advertising firm as a product, lifestyle, or fashion photographer, as a travel photographer, as an interior/architectural photographer, or as a wedding/ event photographer to name a few. There are several branches in photography and each of them has something to offer.

6. Which is your favourite book and why?

Ans: When you are a reader, it is so difficult to choose a favourite. If I had to pick one right now, it would be ‘Life is what you make it’ and its sequel ‘Wake up, life is calling’ by an Indian author named Preeti Shenoy.

It talks about a female suffering from bipolar disorder and how she makes peace with it. It is a really good book, not very heavy on the head either, but you can learn a lot from it.
