Zoheboy - DJing Is More Like A Way Of Life Than Just A Job Or Passion (DJ/Producer)

I always told my students that their actual skill will come out only after they’ve completed the course but it’s not the end of learning, it’s the beginning of it on their own.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Since childhood, I always knew I had something to do with since I had collected a couple of party cassettes so it all started during my school days when I started playing for everyone through my collection of cassettes. These musical beats and tunes always pulled me towards it and in my teenage years, I was completely obsessed with music.

Started DJing in 2004 under the moniker “DJ Zanny” in my native city Calcutta now Kolkata. Performed in innumerable private events and gigs in the whole of Eastern India before I started playing for few clubs in the city. Since we live in India so my playlists consisted of Bollywood and International tracks but more of International music what I always liked playing for the crowd.

I always aimed to perform the most uncommon music for the crowd to set a different benchmark for myself through my music. Later in 2009, I learned Music Production because with time I always wanted to learn the art of producing music and not just play them.

Since I mostly liked remixing songs so in the yesteryears I shared remixes of both Bollywood and International numbers under my moniker “DJ Zanny”.

In 2018 I created a moniker “ZOHEBOY” which only represent Bollywood and Asian Remixes and continued DJ Zanny only for International Remixes on all social platforms. Currently working on both my monikers simultaneously as a DJ/Producer.

2. Is DJ'ing a mainstream and financially stable career in India yet?

Well, DJing is an art and we cannot expect an instant return from any form of art that we pursue. In a country like India, it takes a lot of support from family and friends to continue to grow and have a financially stable career. Most importantly, networking is the key.

Currently, in the current year 2021, we are over-saturated with DJs all over the world as all see so according to me only the most extraordinary will stand out to have a successful career in India or anywhere in the world with a little bank balance to support the career.

3. Who is your favourite artist and why?

My favourite musician since my childhood has always been and will be Michael Jackson. I look up him as my idol and biggest inspiration in my life for the music I have in me.

I remember during my childhood days when I started listening to his newly released album back the 90’s called “Dangerous” I found myself listening to his tracks back to back on repeat which continued for a couple of years every time he released his new music albums. It is because of him that I’m into music today.

4. What are some of the common myths about your profession?

Most common myths about being a DJ I would say that people come to an understanding that whoever pursues DJing is also into smoking and drinking which is absolutely wrong. I personally know many DJs who are not into any of these sorts of things and are fitness freaks and food lovers.

Also, I would like to add that DJing is not something which can make someone successful in a year or two but it does take years of practice, networking and good reputation to be a successful DJ.

5. How and from where can one gain formal training for being a DJ?

Now that we have so many DJ Academy all over India, anyone can enrol for a DJing course to learn the art of DJing. I always told my students that their actual skill will come out only after they’ve completed the course but it’s not the end of learning, it’s the beginning of it on their own.

According to me, no one can claim that they know it all when it comes to music in DJing or Music Production. This learning has no end to it.

6. What are the kind of opportunities you get after being a DJ?

Opportunities depend on the kind of friend circle or the kind of company one is in. It does take a lot of networking through social media but also attending music events plays a major role.

7. Your message for people who want to make their passion their profession.

In India, most hobbies and passion is just taken for the sake of it and only people who continue with their passionate interest come up with some results. DJing is a sort of your own business which you do by performing music at different places in the city or across the country but to come to a national level name it does takes years of performance.

If someone is passionate about music I would say they should continue doing it without stepping back no matter how many ups and downs life gives you. For me, DJing is more like a way of life than just a job or passion.

8. Which is your favourite book and why?

Honestly, I have never been a book worm since all my time I spent researching on music but out of the few books I’ve read “The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho” is my favourite book because it gave me a new view and perception towards life which I never had before I read it.
