Hurricane Dorian – The Most Intense Tropical Cyclone

Hurricane Dorian was the extremely powerful hurricane on record to hit the
Bahamas. Once it made landfall, it hovered over the country. It formed on August
24, 2019 and dissipated on September 10, 2019.

Where did the Hurricane Dorian Originated ?

Hurricane Dorian originated from a large tropical wave of an elongated trough of
low air pressure which departed from the western coast of Africa on August 19,
2009. Around that time, much of the wave’s convection or thunderstorm activity
was located inland near Guinea and Senegal rather than close to its center.

Dorian was devastating. The strongest storm ever to strike the Bahamas caused
more than 70 deaths and damaged and destroyed more than 13,000 homes on
Grand Bahamas Island and the Abaco Islands. Both islands are in the upper
reaches of the 500 mile long.

How many People are Missing ?

More than 29,472 persons were affected by the hurricane by damages to their
homes and assets. Between September 1 and 3, hurricane Dorian struck Grand
Bahamas and Abaco with punishing winds and storm surges, with the islands of
New Providence also suffering some impacts.

The official death toll stands at more than 70 but official have said that more than
600 undocumented residents may have drowned and been washed out to sea. Dorian pummeled the islands with sustained winds of 185 mph, storm surges and
torrential rain in a sustained two-day assault.

The current death toll stands at 74 people with 63 from Abaco and 22 from Grand
Bahamas, although 245 people are still missing. Still there is no official
information about it.

How many times the Bahamas have been hit by a Hurricane?

A hurricane passes near the Bahamas on average of every two years. A hurricane makes direct hit on the islands on average of every four years. Category 5 – one
hurricane and Category 4 - seven hurricanes have struck the Bahamas since storms were first recorded in 1851.

Hurricane Isaias is the first hurricane to hit Bahamas since destructive Dorian. Then last time a hurricane struck the Bahamas, the impacts were catastrophic. Hurricane Dorian stalled over the islands as a category 5 monster that killed dozens and unleashed a toxic oil spill.

Have Bahamas Overcame the Dorian Damages?

Hurricane Dorian has been among the most devastating natural disasters ever to hit the Bahamas. The estimated damages and losses from it amount to US $3.4 billion. It is a number equivalent to a quarter of the country’s GDP. It also resulted in the revision of the Bahamas economic growth forecast.

Just over a month after hurricane Dorian slammed into the northern Bahamas, parts of the island nation are still in ruins, thousands of people remain displaced and rebuilding were almost over.

Of the Bahamas’s 700 islands, 14 of the most-visited spots, including Nassau,
Paradise island, Eleuthera, Harbour island, the Exumas, Bimini and Andros island
were minimally affected by hurricane Dorian. Their hotels, restaurants, and local
businesses are eagerly awaiting for tourists to return.
