Water Crisis - The Future of Our Country

By 2030 40% of all India food has no water in the ground and no access to drinking water as well according to the data of Indian Meteorological Department according to the data of Indian Meteorological Department more than half of the country is undergoing and more than half will undergo in two conditions leading to drought.

States Under Water Crisis

In year 2018 and 19 some of the worst stage of water crisis was seen in different parts of India, in the state of Tamil Nadu one of the the oldest lake in Chennai was dried up because of some climatic changes leading to to shortage of water in Chennai in order to cope up with this issue the restaurants were put on hold and a work from home Was initiated by the IT hubs but such stories are rampant all over the India.

There were a lot of incidents in Madhya Pradesh where people were fighting over Water amongst themselves; In one such incident the driver of a water tanker was attacked over the issue of water (they alleged) that he was not providing them water in a proper manner.

There were also reports of riots from Uttar Pradesh as well in Jharkhand that a Man attacked 6 people with a knife in a brawl over Water.

In Rajasthan people have started to lock their water containers to prevent stealing of water.

Role Of Climate Change

The problem of the water crisis is greatly interrelated with climate change, biodiversity destruction and environmental destruction. Due to climate change our summers are becoming hotter and winters are becoming colder and the monsoon season is becoming shorter but the intensity of the rain has increased.

This leads to floods whenever it rains and drought when it does not rain and such things happen on a large scale when more trees are cut down and the environment is further destroyed. In 2019 some reports came out that following bullet train tracks 54000 of mangroves were cut down

How did the Government React?

What Has been the response of our government in this intense crisis?

The government was/ is/ and will not accept the problem of the water crisis until the minister’s themselves face the problem. A minister of Tamil Nadu states that the water crisis is manufactured news.

Some days later the same was spotted performing a puja regarding the water crisis and countries Jal Shakti minister Gajender Shekhawat says that water scarcity is a fake hype created by the media. According to him, this isn’t as big of a crisis as projected by the media.

But now as the situations are becoming severe the center has provided some solutions and some aims to provide clean water to 20 million rural households by 2024 under the Jal Jeevan Mission, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

What can we as an Individual should do?

You must have heard people saying to reduce the use of water but reduction is not the only way, in fact an easier and better way is to reuse. Now a question arises: what type of water should be reused?

The very first option for reusing the water is the coming out of our Air Conditioners installed in our houses or offices, as this water is released by the Ac when the humidity is soaked from our rooms.

This water is clean enough to be used for bathing and washing utensils but not clean enough to drink. This method can save up to 5-10 liters of water from being wasted away, depending upon the humidity in the air.

The second option is our RO filter in which around 75% of the water is wanted while filtering the rest and most of the water that comes out the RO is mostly salty and not dirty or unclean.

This water is a type of Grey Water which either cannot be used for bathing or cleaning utensils but can be used for cleaning the floor or watering the plants and may be even used for washing the vehicles.

So, these were some very easy to perform and basic tasks that we as an individual can perform in order to survive the current and upcoming water crisis.
