From the launch to the present :
If you don't know when was windows 10 launched, then it was launched on 29th July 2015. The policy of Microsoft at that time was to provide a time limit to all the customers using windows 7, 8 and 8.1 to upgrade their version of windows from their respective versions to windows 10 for free. This time limit was actually set to last before December end of 2015, but then it was expanded up to 29th July 2016.
Most of the people in the world are unaware of the on-going policy change that Microsoft did not disclose after 29th July 2016 passed. So stick onto this article to learn how to upgrade your old machine to windows 10.
Good news for users :
There's a good news for windows users who are still using the older versions of Windows OS. The good news is that you can upgrade your PC to the newest version of windows right now and also in the future until Microsoft does any change in it's policies.
The standard edition of windows 10 costs more that $139 and millions and millions of users will upgrade their windows version to windows 10 due to security reasons. So Let's move onto how we can upgrade our PC to the newest version.
Pre-requisites before upgrading windows :
Before we discuss how to upgrade your windows to the newest version, there are some things that you should compulsorily do. The pre-requisites are listed below :
- Remove any unwanted software from your PC by uninstalling it as these types of software might be buggy and could fail the upgrade.
- Remove bloatware from your PC.
- Make sure that your windows is scanned with a good antivirus, so that no errors occur.
- Eject any external drives that are attached to the PC, as it can cause the upgrade program to get confused as to where it should install the system files.
- Have your PC serviced before upgrading, so as to minimize the heating when the upgrade is going on.
Steps to upgrade windows :
- Download the Upgrade tool from here.
- When you finish downloading the setup, click on it to run and accept the terms and conditions.
- Choose 'Upgrade this PC now' and then click 'Next.'
- You will see an option for fresh install and current installation. Choose 'Keep personal files and apps.'
- Click 'Install'. The installation procedure may take some time and will involve multiple restarts for error-free installation.
- Once installed, go to Settings>Windows update>Activation to activate the digital license of windows 10.
- If you didn't activate your previous version of windows, you must activate the windows by entering-in the Genuine product key for your previous windows.
- To check the activation, you can go to Settings>Windows Update>Activation. If successfully activated, it will show 'Your windows is activated.'
Pro-tip :
If something horrible happens to your computer, like activation and upgrade is stuck or somehow you had to format your computer, then you need not to worry anything related to your windows 10 activation, as your product key and activation for windows 10 is linked to the specific hardware that your PC has. So even if an anomaly happens your windows will activate automatically, even after a fresh install.
Caution: If you upgrade your PC's hardware, then windows 10 might think that you bought a new machine. In this case, you can register your product to your Microsoft account and reactivate your windows as and when needed.
For the coming days :
Microsoft has not yet taken back the free upgrade procedure because there are still millions of PC users who love to use windows 7 because of its high stability and troubleshooting systems. In comparison with windows 7, windows 10 is much buggy in nature and its use. So most of the organizations recommend their employees to use windows 7.
The policy and aspirations of Microsoft is to provide as much trust and service to the consumers so that they upgrade their older windows systems to the newest windows 10. One of the factors for continuing the free-upgrade process is because of the security reasons and the high prices of new Windows 10 verisons.
Arriving at the conclusion, the best practice will be to upgrade your older system to the newer windows 10 for performance and security enhancement.
