Contemporary romance author, Jenna Hartley writes about strong, independent women and the men who dare to love them. Her characters aren't perfect; they're authentic.
1. Tell us more about your background and journey.
I'm trained as a lawyer but found my passion in writing. I've always wanted to be a writer, though I always imagined myself writing something in non-fiction. The history of women and power or the ways in which leaders manipulate their image in order to project power.
A few years ago, a friend introduced me to romance novels, and I was hooked! I've always loved dissecting people's motivations and feelings, and romance is a great genre that allows me to filter through and have fun with those!
2. Is writing a financially stable career?
It's a career that requires the ability to pivot. There is great earning potential, for sure. But it's a lot of hard work, and sometimes a bit of luck.
3. Who is your favorite writer and why?
Gah. Do I really have to pick one? I have so many, and it really depends on my mood. That said, I recently read The Awakened Woman by Tererai Trent, and she really has a gift for language. She is a magical storyteller who speaks through the page.
4. Where does your inspiration lie?
Everywhere! It comes from songs, movies, life, nature. If you open your eyes and look around, there's inspiration all around!
5. What piece of advice would you like to give to future aspiring writers?
One of my favorite quotes is, "Comparison is the thief of joy." You can compare yourself to other writers, or you can celebrate them and realize that their success is an opportunity.
They are lighting the path for you, and one day you will light the path for someone else. Stay focused on your craft, develop a community, and have fun!
6. Which is your favorite book and why?
I honestly don't know that I have one. It's rare that I re-read books, though I would say that Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand stands out in my mind.
