Shriti Chhajed - The Present Set of Young People Are Very Enthusiastic About Making Their Mark in the World (Co-Founder - Bookeventz)

Every individual has some skill hence the company identifies that. I personally am a more fan of skills and learning attitude than experience when it comes to marketing, HR, and sales. However, for tech, I would look at not only education but also college.

Tell us about your background, journey, and upbringing.

Born and brought up in Indore in a business family, I pursued graduation in Engineering from SGSITS, Indore in 2007. Post which I worked in development at Tech Mahindra for 2.5 years and then completed my MBA in Marketing from SP Jain - Dubai, Singapore in 2010.

I then worked with HCL in Branding, Events, and Marketing for 2.5 years before I
started my entrepreneurial journey with BookEventz. I was a good speaker and an active committee member for most of my schooling and college.

When and how did you get clarity on what you wanted to do?

After working for 2 years in development after my engineering, I realized I was involved in so many more things than just development being in the core 8 member josh team in a big MNC. And I enjoyed doing all this, driving new initiatives company-wide.

I left my job to start something of my own, build up a couple of business plans for restaurants, cafes. I knew I had to do an MBA from a good B-school before I got into anything and so did my MBA which gave me a wider perspective of what to do. Now I was looking for a good idea before I could quit my job again and that's when Bookeventz came.

Studies today show that an organization can lose INR 10 lakh (~ $17,000) on average on a wrong hire or for hiring someone with a false degree. The only tried and tested way to prevent frauds is via a thorough background verification process. What does your typical workday look like?

I typically finish my meetings in the morning a couple of hours with different teams, post which I work on research and plan for new initiatives, practices, and more for a good 4-5 hours and then again towards day end would discuss with the team some smaller things, doubts, reviews, and approvals.

Several global companies have come out and thrown their support behind not needing a formal education. What is your opinion about this?

Global companies showing support to informal education is not something new. The present set of young people are very enthusiastic about making their mark in the world.

Every individual has some skill hence the company identifies that. I personally am a more fan of skills and learning attitude than experience when it comes to marketing, HR, and sales. However, for tech, I would look at not only education but also college.

How do you handle someone who has lied on their resume?

Usually, I have seen that most people lie on their resumes in case of a lot of switches, they will remove the companies they have worked for for a short duration. But in such a case, I would want to know the reason behind the candidate doing such a thing and if I find it genuine and the candidate told about it up front, I would consider else it is usually a direct rejection.

What are some of your typical challenges and how have they evolved over time?

Challenges are something that pushes me towards working better. Initially, there were really a lot of challenges. The challenges were about forming a team, making the team functional, and getting the right people on board. Also, making sure that the business comes out profitable.

Now, after 5 - 6 years of the company's incorporation, the challenges have shifted and now it is about running the business smoothly and ensuring that it excels in the market. But as I said, challenges are an exciting part of achieving the goals.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs or those eyeing the top job?

Couple of things you should think about when you are starting out

  • Identify if your business is going to be a Lifestyle business whose aim is being profitable or aim for a Hockey stick growth trajectory business that requires a fair amount of capital, and then stick to it.
  • Work on getting the core team right, if you get this right, other things will follow.

Which is your favorite book and why?

Zero to One by Blake Masters and Peter Theil, The Power of Subconscious mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy. Zero to One is one book that is very close to my heart because I can resonate so much with the title itself. Building a company from zero employees to hundreds who are working tirelessly to make the business run efficiently is a zero to one journey for me.
