Myths About Leadership Skills and How to Overcome Them

The word leader means in its literal definition as the one who leads the way and the group towards desired destiny. In today’s world, one who is a leader has the responsibility to lead the team and win the competitive race in the market.

Leaders have some special traits that make them commanding and guiding light towards team goals and ambitions. However, in this world there exists fewer leaders and many team members that make leaders dignified with the special position of the main one.

This sparks a common debatable theory in society that leaders are born, not made. I present some of the myths and facts about this debate and let’s find out whether leaders are born or can be made.

Myth 1: Leaders are Born not made

Most people subconsciously or consciously believe this fact to be true when it comes to being a great leader. There is a common perception about being a leader that certain traits are acquired from birth that makes the leaders of the future.

Traits like being visionary, energetic, dynamic, courageous, inspiring, charismatic define a leader. These traits are just characteristics observed in a leader when the leader leads a group towards their goals.

This is a myth and in reality, everyone is a leader of a group or at least of themselves. What leadership means is the ability to lead or guide yourself or the group towards destiny regardless of the outcome.

Sometimes, outcomes of actions come into the favor of the leader and sometimes outcome happens against the expectations. It is normal for people to win or lose in their matches however a key difference between a leader versus a non-leader lies in accepting the defeat and moving on with improving on their weakness and holding strength.

Myth 2: Leaders know Everything

In some situations when a team requires desperate measures to sustain itself or win the game, critical thinking and decision-making of the leader lead to winning or grabbing the situation. Many people praise and adore the leadership of the captain and expect a leader to be correct in their decisions.

However, from a leader’s shoes, the moment of the critical move is a lot stressful and pressurizing. While taking critical decisions, leaders have to sacrifice their image and comfort of their worthiness.

Sometimes, it goes good and other times it doesn’t favor the outcome. The fact that differentiates a leader from the rest of the team is about taking courage to face consequences regardless of the outcome.

Myth 3: Leaders convince People

Most people believe that leadership is about influencing the people and getting things done in time to have a winning outcome. However, in reality, leadership is about connecting with teammates and people deeply. One who focuses their energy on connecting with the ideology of teammates has compelling power of leadership.

Leadership is never about convincing the people of influencing their minds and getting things done. Leadership is about using the group's ideas and giving a direction that can be agreed, upon to fulfill the goals of the team.

Myth 4: Leaders Speak a Lot

To direct and get results for any team, leaders should be commanding and must speak about decisions and actions. It is assumed that leaders have good speaking skills which are true in many aspects but the bigger picture does not lie in listening to others more than being verbose.

For being a good speaker, listening to others with the intent of understanding is important. Generally, people listen with the intent of replying and that limits the ability to have impactful communication.

Overall, the listening ability is the main focus of the leadership quality that makes the personality the king of the people’s minds and hearts.

Myth 5: Leaders have Good Foresight in Future

Leaders are just common members of the team who have the same experience as other teammates. The key difference between a common member and a team leader is about having little idea about figuring out the outcome by connecting all the dots that lead to achieving goals.

To be an effective leader, one should be self-aware and try to resonate with the team's voice, guiding with wisdom that beings the given result. In a nutshell, leaders have the same new experience of present upcoming situations but the ability of past decisions and wisdom is an important trait of a leader.

Bottom line:

Leadership is a unique quality that is possessed by every individual within. At every stage of life, everyone is a leader of themselves. Managing the present and handling the obstacles with self-awareness of accepting the outcomes is needed that everyone needs to be a good leader.

Leadership is for everyone and should be reminded from time to time to hit the goals with greater success.
