We all have our favorite Disney princess, right? We like the glam, the music, the charm, the fantasy, and all the magic these beautiful creatures bring to our lives. But, did you ever look closely at Disney female characters?
If you did, you probably noticed that there’s a remarkable difference between old-era princesses and new-era princesses. They do not have the same looks, nor do they have the same wishes and ways of thinking. Disney princesses, with no single doubt, have enormous effects on kids. Children acquire a lot of values, ideas, and viewpoints just from watching these movies.
Disney movies, then, are more than just fun visuals; they serve as learning tools that sometimes transmit stereotypes and gender roles while other times teach all the good deeds. Keep on reading to better analyze your Disney idols!
Traditional Disney Princesses
Though the kindness and positive traits that Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty carry within, they all seem to be passive and incapable of bettering their situations. The three of them highlight the typical beauty standards. The three of them, also, were in desperate need of somebody to help them out.
Snow White

Snow White was perceived as a very beautiful and attractive princess. Snow White cannot defend herself against her evil stepmother and protect her castle. Instead, she gets to live with seven dwarfs and constantly cleans their house and cooks for them. She was not brave enough to get out of her misery but she was only waiting for an outside force to do that for her. The help came in the form of the charming prince who ultimately rescued Snow White and married her.
Cinderella

Cinderella was not different from Snow White. This lady does nothing to stop the evil stepmother and envious ugly stepsisters from treating her badly. Cinderella obeys the typical beauty standards with her white complexion, small waist, beautiful eyes, and attractive look. Still, because of her naiveness and weakness, Cinderella fails at rescuing herself until she gets saved by the charming prince, again, another man who showed up at just the right time to save the poor weak lady.
Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty is again no exception from the two other princesses. Beauty is again all that matters since the fairies have given Aurora beauty, not another trait, as a gift. Aurora does not even show any sign of strong personality or intelligence. She is highly passive, and again, the prince saves the day with one kiss that wakes her up.
In between the traditional and modern Disney princesses' ages, we have what we call the "rebel children era". It is, in fact, at this point when the transition in the Disney princess started to take place. Disney ladies, here, came all willing to discover new things and know more about the world, however, the need for somebody else is always there.
Ariel

Ariel this vivid creature is blessed with a very beautiful voice among all her sisters. The new thing that Ariel has brought to the Disney world is probably the fact that she challenged her family and her community and stood against them, unlike the previous princesses. However, she still resembled them in the sense that she had the opportunity to turn into a human and she used it right after she saw Prince Eric.
Belle

Belle from The Beauty and The Beast has brought a change to the Disney female. Belle is not pictured as the conventionally beautiful Disney lady, rather she appears as the intelligent woman who reads books. Belle is not even satisfied with her society and does not feel she belongs to it. She is not into looks since she fell for the Beast and saw his personality and good nature before his ugly features.
Jasmine

Jasmine is yet another transitional move in the Disney female world. She breaks up from the old beauty standards since she is a princess of color. She is also a rebel princess as she decided not to obey the rules of marrying a man of high status, rather she sees in Aladdin everything that she needs to live a beautiful life.
Modern Disney Princesses
Rapunzel, Merida, Elsa, and other recent Disney princesses belong to the strong independent woman age. These newly created female leaders have proved that you do not always need an exterior power to save you, all that you rather need is persistence and belief in yourself.
Rapunzel

Rapunzel continued what the rebel princesses did before, and rebelled against Mother Gothel who indoctrinated her that there is only evil outside and she is not strong enough to protect herself. She is pictured as a stubborn woman and she truly challenged the old depiction of the princesses being so naïve and weak, incapable of getting out of their miserable situations.
Merida

Merida is another revolutionary change in the Disney lady, especially since she does not have feminine-like manners. Merida is passionate about archery. She does not want to fulfill her mother's wish to get married which made her the very first Disney lady who does not need a charming prince to save her day.
Elsa

Elsa the powerful Disney princess with some powers that were deemed evil, does not have any single love interest. This movie is very different in the sense that it focuses on the sister bond between Elsa and Anna. It showed how Elsa survived the dangers without the need for a male to help her out.
She just stood by her sister which sheds the light on the power of unified women to save one another. When you reflect on the evolution of the Disney princess, you cannot help but appreciate what Disney is trying to bring to the world with its creative magical productions. Today's princess is a powerful, strong, independent, and unique kind of woman who needs no one but herself to save the day.
