10 Traditional Skills in India Which are Popular Worldwide



India is a country which is famous for various things since the very early times. One of them is art and craft. Different states and tribes in India have a different tradition, hence a different skill in art and craft.

These art and crafts encourage tourism in India as well. Many people from different countries visit our country to especially witness the art in traditional India. 

Let's have a look at the different varieties of traditional skills possessed by Indians of different tribes and regions. 


1. Mithila Painting, Bihar

Earlier known as Madhubani painting, is one of the oldest and most popular art forms in India. It traditionally belongs to Bihar but now is equally famous across the country.

In this, geometric patterns are painted with twigs, matchsticks or fingers (now with pen nibs as well). It has bright colours and is popularly used for wall decoration and saree borders etc. 


2. Bamboo and Cane Craft, Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh has an abundance of bamboo and canes. This craft of making different products from bamboo is very popular in the state. In fact, each tribe in Arunachal Pradesh has its own weaving style and unique tradition.


3. Wood Craft, Jharkhand

There are dense forests surrounding the state of Jharkhand hence, wood availability is very high. This wood is used by the artisans to create variety of products including decoration items, wooden spoons, wooden boxes etc.

The major reason of popularity of this art form in Jharkhand is the quality of woodcraft and they fine details they carve on the wood. 


4. Coconut Shell Handicrafts, Kerala

This popular art form of Kerala is beautiful as well as eco-friendly. But making things out of coconut shells require a lot of expertise and practice. Sugar containers, boxes and other decoration items made by this art form by the artisans in Kerala are extremely popular. 


5. Warli Painting, Maharashtra

This folk art of Maharashtra is unique and very popular in Maharashtra. Traditionally, this actually used to be a painting done on the inner walls of villags huts. They used the white colour by grinding rice into fine powder and then mixing it with water. 

The painting include geometric shapes like triangles or circles. From the painting, instead of representing any diety or mythological characters, the artist shows social life of villagers, and that's the most unique thing about this art form


6. Weaving, Meghalaya

Meghalaya is home to a rich variety of handwoven textiles. This art form has been existing in Meghalaya since a long time. This basically belongs to the tribals of Meghalaya under the monopoly of women. This is also an important eco-friendly cottage based industry in Meghalaya. 


7. Blue Pottery, Jaipur

Blue pottery that is extremely popular as an art form of Jaipur was actually originated in Persia. The pottery is done with base which include a mix of quartz, powdered glass, borax, stone powder, gum, water and multani mitti. Various decorative items like door knobs, tiles, vases,pots etc. are produced by this technique. 

The name of the art is derived from the cobalt blue dye they use to colour the items made.
 

8. Pashmina Shawls, Jammu and Kashmir

Other than it's beautiful mountains, lakes and gardens, Jammu Kashmir is also known worldwide for the pashmina shawls. The woolen shawls woven by specialised artisans are extremely soft. This variety of shawl is the most famous art form in India.

9. Kondapalli Dolls, Andhra Pradesh

This popular art form of Andhra Pradesh is about 400 years old. The artists make dolls from a very soft wood by carving each part separately. And then they are joined together. After drying, they add the fine details and colours.

The dolls made are showcased in a special ceremony on the day of Sankranthi. 


10. Zari Work, Gujarat

Zari or gold thread embroidery is one of the most famous tradition art forms in Gujarat. They weave thread spun of very fine gold or silver and then weave them into fabric to create beautiful patterns. 

This art is considered one of the most famous techniques of metal embroidery. The zari work of Surat is one of the oldest handicrafts and that makes the city most important zari manufacturing centres in India. 

Other than these, there are many variety of art forms which are done in India traditionally. This makes India one of the richest country in tradition, culture and heritage.
