Bajrangi Bhaijaan - A Movie Review

Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a 2015 Hindi language comedy drama movie directed by Kabir Khan. The film has stars like Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the debutante Harshaali Malhotra. It is the story of Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi, a die-hard devotee of Hanuman who is on a journey to take a mute six-year old Pakistani Muslim girl Shahida, separated in India from her mother, back to her hometown.

The Introduction

The budget of the movie is Rs 75 crore - Rs 90 crore and the principal photography started in November 2014. Pritam composed the songs and the movie received praise for its storyline, music, cinematography, dialogues, direction and cast performances. It is the 6th highest-grossing Indian movie and 3rd highest grossing Bollywood film.


The Opening

In the hills of Sultanpur, Pakistan, lives a six-year old mute girl called Shahida. One afternoon, she is playing on a hill and falls off and is found hanging on a branch protruding from the hill. The following morning, an older man suggests taking her to the shrine of Sufi saint Nizamuddin Aulioya in Delhi, India. This shrine will not only bring peace and happiness but also restore Shahida’s speech. Everything goes as planned but Shahida on their return journey gets lost while trying to save a sheep and misses the train. She boards a freight train and reaches Kurukshetra, India.


The Meeting with Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi

Shahida sees a stranger eating at a street-side restaurant. He realizes that she is mute and calls her Munni. Assuming that she is separated from her parents, she is asked to stand in front of a temple. Munni follows her and is taken to a police station. Without a police complaint, Pawan takes her home in Delhi and also asks her to nod while taking the name of different cities as her home.


The Charm of Kareena

Pawan came to his father’s friend's house to stay. There he meets Rashika who offers him a job at her school and he eventually falls in love with her innocence. Pandey asks Pawan to build his own house before able to marry Rashika. Pawan brings Munni home and she starts behaving in her way. She is seen eating chicken, reading the Quran in front of a shrine. Rashika makes her realize that she is a human first before a Muslim and during the India-Pakistan match she nods yes to the fact that she is from Pakistan.


The Return Journey

Shahida cannot get a visa without a passport. She is next taken to a travel agent who cheats and takes her to a brothel. Pawan fights them and brings them back home. He takes her to Pakistan himself. Upon reaching the Pakistan border, he is beaten up by soldiers but refuses to go before taking their permission which shows his passion and love for God.


The Entry of Journalist Chand Nawab

Munni steals a policeman's handcuffs and they are thrown in jail and labeled as an Indian spy. They escape from there and board a bus. On hearing Munni’s story, they are saved from the police and taken to a mosque. Azad takes them out of the city in burqa. They go to different places hoping it will be Munni’s house.The trio reviews the documentary footage when Munni recognizes her mother in one of the clips. They ask the bus driver and realize that it is Sultanpur. The documentary is launched on YouTube and Pawan gets caught by the police but Munni reaches her home safely.


The Beautiful Ending

People realize that Pawan is not a spy but the officials torture him a lot. Nawab asks the people to gather at the border and help Pawan cross the border. He successfully does so and in the end Munni calls her “Mama” to which Pawan goes and hugs her and the scene ends.


Final Thoughts

This movie is a must watch for all Salman fans, who is seen as a hero and life-saver. The story brilliantly highlights the importance of love and affection amongst people and the need to stop religious wars. Unity is the strength to a peaceful and happy future and the movie is very emotional, entertaining and thought-provoking.
