Allen Thomas - I'm Partially Color-Blind, Which Gives My Work That Extra Dash Of Monochromatic Mojo (Visal Artist)

Ah, the creative process—my playground for turning black and white into technicolor tales! Fun fact: I'm partially color-blind, which gives my work that extra dash of monochromatic mojo.

1. Share your background and journey with us.

Hey there! I'm Allen Thomas, a proud Delhiite with a knack for turning life's quirks into art. My journey kicked off back in my school days when textbooks and I were in an eternal standoff. Instead of hitting the books, I had the class rolling with laughter. Growing up in a traditional Christian household, I faced the classic parental dilemma: a 9-to-5 gig or bust. But 'aam zindagi kisko chahiyae when you can have Mentos Zindagi'. I once dreamt of spinning decks like DJ Aqeel, but alas, the music scene got a bit too spicy for parental approval. Fashion design seemed like the next big thing until I realized my parents had visions of rainbow flags fluttering in their heads.

That's when my buddy Abhishrut introduced me to the world of photography, armed with nothing but an old Sony Cybershot and boundless enthusiasm. Fast forward through camera dreams and parental negotiations, and here I am a seasoned photographer and graphic designer with a rebellious streak and a passion for storytelling. Oh, and a shoutout to my sis and Abhishrut for keeping me sane through it all!

2. As a visual artist, your work spans various mediums and styles. How do you approach the creative process, and what influences your artistic choices?

Ah, the creative process—my playground for turning black and white into technicolor tales! Fun fact: I'm partially color-blind, which gives my work that extra dash of monochromatic mojo. When I pick up my camera, it's like stepping into a world where hues fade and stories take center stage. Whether it's capturing a brand's essence or immortalizing everyday moments, I aim to craft images that stand the test of time. Sure, clients may see it as just another campaign, but for me, it's a chance to weave magic in pixels and ink.

3. Technology has revolutionized the way artists create and share their work. How do you incorporate digital tools and platforms into your creative process?

Ah, technology—the frenemy of every creatively challenged soul! While I may not be the tech guru of the century, I do my best to keep up with the digital dance. But let's be real: chasing algorithms is like playing tag with a ghost. Sure, digital platforms offer a glimpse into the creative cosmos, but too much screen time can lead to a serious case of creative cringe. So, while I may dabble in the digital realm, I prefer to let my art do the talking, sans the digital handcuffs.

4. How do you stay inspired and continue to evolve as an artist? Are there specific sources of inspiration or creative influences you regularly draw upon?

It's all about the three Es: Experiment, Explore, and Evolve! From tinkering with my camera settings to giving dumpster-dived furniture a new lease on life, I'm all about pushing boundaries and painting outside the lines. Sure, there are days when my camera feels like a paperweight, but that's when I switch gears and dive into stand-up comedy or DIY projects. As for inspiration, I take cues from fellow creatives and the world around me, turning everyday moments into timeless tales.

5. Can you discuss the role of feedback and critique in your artistic practice? How do you handle constructive criticism and use it to grow as an artist?

Feedback: the not-so-secret sauce for artistic growth! But let's get one thing straight—I'm not taking notes from just anyone. When it comes to critiques, I turn to fellow creatives or trusted confidants who know their stuff. After all, "It isn't working for me" doesn't cut it in my book. I need specifics, people! And when I need a reality check, I call in the big guns—my sister, the queen of brutal honesty and the unsung hero behind my success. She is the one who keeps me grounded too.

6. What is a book you love and would recommend our readers to give it a try?

Books? Meh, it's not my cup of tea. But if you're looking for some ear candy, I would go for what MS Dhoni said: “I think the CBSE books are very good because other books may or may not help you but they get you marks and grades and that can help you in the future”. I am more of a Podcast Listener. As for podcasts, I've got a playlist that'll make your commute fly by Simple Ken, Wakeupwithsorabh, Kaafiwildhai by Apoorv Gupta, Jay Shetty Podcast, Colin and Samir, and Internet Said So. Trust me, your ears will thank me later!
