Engineering still remains to be one of the most opted for academic course among the Indian student community. Thus most of the engineering colleges and institutes offer the perks of campus placements which serves as an important criterion affecting the credibility of institutes among the student community.


Adding to placements, the fee structure, campus, faculties, ranking of the institute are other major factors that determines the choice of joining an institute. Hereby an attempt is made to list the top 10 engineering colleges in India based on the provided factors along with an insight into these elite engineering institutes.


1. IIT Madras

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) holds the first rank among the engineering institutes of India for the last three consecutive years and holds second position just after IIMA in overall educational institutions. IITM was established in 1959, covers 59 courses under 4 major streams. The eligibility of the student is determined by the JEE main and JEE advanced scores along with the marks obtained in higher secondary examinations.

Being ranked 264 internationally and 48 in Asia, IITM is visited by prominent recruiters like Google, IBM, Goldman Sachs, ITC etc. Computer Science and engineering tops the placement record with 90% of students placed offered with a salary package of 7 lakhs to 95 lakhs per annum.


2. IIT Bombay

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) was established in 1959 and is ranked 2nd in Engineering institutes of India and 179th position in global. The aspirants need to clear Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) main and JEE advanced as their scores are considered mandatory. IIT Bombay provides with the specialisations in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering etc.

Computer Science and Engineering topped the placement record with 96.51% where the salary package was offered between 12 lakhs to 80 lakhs per annum. The top recruiters were Uber and Microsoft, which offered a salary package of 1.5 Cr to the applicant.


3. IIT Delhi

One of the top engineering institutes granted with full autonomy over its operations and activities. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) was established in 1961 fosters more than 4500 students in an academic year. IIT Delhi is ranked 4 in among Indian colleges and 3rd in engineering institutions. It also hold 41st rank in Asia and 172nd position in a global scale.

Similar to other IITs, the applicants are sorted on the basis of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) main and JEE advanced. The major recruiters include Microsoft, Flipkart, Zomato, Amazon, Uber etc. The average salary package is around 16 lakhs and highest bid was 1.6 Cr per annum.


4. IIT Kharagpur

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITK) is the first IIT established in 1951. The entry into IITK similar to other IITs is based on Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) main and JEE advanced. More than 12000 students are tutored in an academic year and IITK offers a number of specialisations including Chemical engineering, Mechanical engineering, Civil engineering, Electrical engineering, Industrial engineering, Instrumentation, Computer science and engineering etc.

The major recruiters include Standard Chartered, Capgemini, Intel, Wipro etc. offering a salary package between 15 lakhs to 1 Cr.


5. IIT Kanpur

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur holds the 5th position among the top Engineering institutions of India. It was established in 1959 and the eligible applicants are filtered through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) main and JEE advanced for bachelors and undergraduates are selected on the basis of GATE and CAT scores for Post-Graduation. IIT Kanpur offers specialisation in courses including Aerospace engineering, Mechanical engineering, Materials engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer science and Engineering etc.

Moreover IIT Kanpur ranks 7 among the Indian colleges, 5th among the business management institutes and holds 59th position in Asia and 293rd in global base. Major recruiters from IIT Kanpur include Google, ITC, Goldman Sachs, Flipkart etc.

6. IIT Roorkee

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) was established in 2001. In addition to engineering IITR offered streams including Management, Social Science, humanities and Applied Science. IITR is ranked 6th among the top Engineering institutions and holds 431st position in a global level.
IITR was previously known as University of Roorkee which was established in 1847. University of Roorkee is the oldest technological based institution of Asia. The IITR offers specialisations in engineering including Biotech, Production and Industrial engineering, Mechanical engineering, Polymer Science, ECE, Computer science and engineering etc.


7. BITS- PILANI

Birla Institute of Technology and Science located in Pilani was established in 1964. It is also one among the top institutes recognised as Institutes of Eminence that has complete autonomy and governance over its operations and activities. Being one of the biggest campuses of India BITS has extended its institutions to Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai. They foster more than 8000 students per academic year from 15 departments and more than 30 specialisations.

BITS- Pilani ranks 7th among the Engineering institutes of India according to The Week and holds 19th position among overall colleges. It also holds 16th position in Management institutes and 5th in Pharmacy. The entry into BITS is regulated through scores obtained BITSAT examination.


8. Anna University

Anna University was established in 1978, named after the great political leader of Tamil Nadu. Anna University ranks 4th among the top universities of India and 8th among the engineering institutes of India. The applicants are appropriated by the scores of Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE).

Anna University ranks between 301-350 in Asia and 651-700 in global stage. The major recruiters include Infosys, CTS, TCS, Wipro etc. with an average salary package of 6-12 lakhs per annum.


9. NIT

National Institute of Technology, after IITs, are one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in India engineering institutes of India with 31 campuses all over the country. NITs offer both under graduate degrees and masters courses. Scores obtained in Joint Entrance Examination is considered prior similar to IITs. National Institute of Technology Trichy tops the list of NITs and it ranks 11 among the top engineering institutes of India. 18 NITs has so far made into the top 100 engineering institutes of India.

Nearly 220 companies visited NITs for recruitment and 90-100% students were placed from bachelors and 75-100% students were placed after masters along with a salary package offered at 6 lakhs per annum.



10. BIT- Mesra

Birla Institute of Technology ranked 8th amongst top engineering colleges in India according to India Today. It also holds 23rd position among management institutes in India and 20th in pharmacy. BIT Mesra was established in 1955 at Ranchi comprising of 21 departments including Biotech, Civil engineering, Computer science and engineering, ECE, IT, Mechanical engineering, Production engineering etc.

The major recruiters include Infosys, Byju’s, Wipro etc. offering an average salary package of 9 lakhs and highest salary package of 34 lakhs per annum.
