Abhay Almal's Youth Leadership Conference Experience

When was the last time you did something for the first time? YLC was the last time I did a lot of first things. And I did not expect to do any of it. That is the kind of adventure on offer if one is lucky enough to get selected for the Youth Leadership Conference hosted by the founders of Eat My News. I came to know about the conference, and EMN through my placement cell, which distributed an application form to apply for this unknown entity. Google searches yielded only glowingly positive reviews, which made me even more suspicious. Prone to impulsive risks, I applied anyway, got selected, and decided to pay the fee to attend YLC 9. Come the night before the first day of the conference, I still did not know much about anything. An itinerary of events had not been shared, nor was there any contact with anyone else attending the conference.

On top of this, we were scheduled to stay in a hotel overnight with a bunch of strangers. The thought of not showing up lingered at the back of my mind fairly late into the night before the big day. But I decided to take a leap of faith and play it by ear. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

The two days of YLC were truly a roller coaster unlike one I had ever experienced. I expected endless formal sessions that would teach us various essential skills for the modern job market, and though that was also part of the experience, it was far from the only component of it.

The structure of the conference ensured that we interacted with our peers in several different scenarios, such as under pressure situations for various activities, or a more intellectual capacity during discussions in sessions. This helped us combat the initial disposition we all have when meeting a new person: to show only one side of ourselves to them. YLC helped me build connections with my peers not just on a superficial level, but something more concrete that could last beyond the conference. It also taught me valuable lessons that I wish everyone was exposed to due to the utility they possess towards all individuals who are grappling with the same issues that brought the participants of YLC 9.0 together.
