Student Leader Interview: Tamandeep Dhawan from SGND Khalsa College, University of Delhi

Tell us more about your role and responsibilities in your college and society?

I am from SGND Khalsa College, the University of Delhi and I believe that I am one of the most active students in my college. In my first year when I was rejected by almost all the societies of my college, I started my own startups in the media and e-commerce industry. I am the founder of DU Assassins – One of the Leading Campus Publication and Pledgeback – a cashback portal for all your needs. After getting successful in my entrepreneurial life, I joined a few societies in my 2nd year – Udyamita : The Entrepreneurship cell, KIRT: The Economics society and SOFICA – Finance & investment cell. Now, I am in 3rd year of my college and I am the President of 2 societies (E-Cell & Economics cell) and Vice president of Finance & Investment cell. I was also nominated for Top 50 tech leader award by Intercon Dubai 2019.

What's it like to juggle between a leadership role and normal college life.

Normal college life will be a bit boring if you work only on your academics. Being on various leadership roles, it is very difficult to handle all the things together at the same time. But as times flies, it becomes habitual and time management is what we started focusing on. I always gave my best to the societies that I am currently leading. I believe that normal college life and leadership roles should be balanced.

As a leader, what challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

As a leader of various cells, the main issue that I faced is the workload of teachers and students along with responsibilities to succeed in a particular task. The main issue arises when you are managing 2-3 work at the same time. But, I overcome these problems by managing my work, time and fellow mates all together at once. Every leader or manager will face these issues once in his life and if he succeeded in overcoming then they will never face any failure.

What are your career goals and how is your present role going to help you with that?

I am planning to complete my higher studies i.e MBA in marketing from Germany and have planned for September 2020 intake. Being a leader and taking my interest into consideration I think that I fit best in this program and my current roles along with my startup experience will help me to grow more. About my career, I wanted to enter the aviation industry in the field of ongoing marketing for sure and I will try my best to do so in the near future.

What's your message to encourage students to do internships and attend conferences?

Doing internships and attending conferences always help you to grow inside out. I interned with various companies, startups and myself running my own startup gives me a lot of exposure and experience. I would say that every student should at least do an internship in the first year itself. From my personal experience of internship in Cashkaro - India’s largest cashback firm, I gained a lot of knowledge and experience. Attending seminars will help students to increase personal skills such as public speaking, help in networking. Internships and seminars both play a very crucial role in shaping the attitude of students in the corporate world.
