1. Tell us more about your role and responsibilities at your college.
It is important for students to take up responsibilities. Student responsibility is demonstrated when students take an active role in their learning by recognizing they are accountable for their academic success when students make choices and take actions that lead them towards their educational goals. When you do what you have promised, people see you as a responsible and reliable person. This will definitely boost your self-esteem and self-worth.
This quality will be valuable as a working professional as well, for as an employee, you will soon find that you are given tasks and assignments of higher importance, ultimately leading to raises and promotions.
In my college, I have many roles and responsibilities. I am a member of five societies, Markus: The marketing society of HRC, Women Development Cell, and Spicmacay to name a few. I am also part of the groups of scribes of North Campus. Being a first year student and from a science background, I feel good to be a part of so many societies. I’m happy that I am able to manage my time for studies as well as for co-curricular activities. I am ready and am looking forward to the responsibilities waiting for me in the future.
2. What is it like to juggle between a leadership role and normal college life? Do you enjoy the kind of influence you hold at such a young age?
It is not at all a burden but I rather enjoy it. There are some students who cannot cope with normal college life alone. On the other hand, I’m a person who manages college tasks as well as social work. It is quite challenging to manage classes, labs, and society tasks but I love doing all the work simultaneously.
I do love the influence I hold at such a young age. I am proud to be the only student in my class who is a part of so many societies. These societies not only help me in developing my skills but also help me to increase my social connections. As a result, I have friends from several other courses as well.
3. How did you rise up to your position and how can a student who aspires the same, approach it?
I have been determined from the very first year of my school. I have always been the class representative in my school days. This built up confidence in me and this is how I developed a number of skills. With my confidence and leadership qualities, I have risen to this position.
Every student should develop different skills from a very tender age as and when the opportunity presents itself. Every student should always be ready to take up the responsibilities the elders assign. With responsibilities, one can learn to be self- independent and gain confidence as
well.
4. What have been some of your biggest challenges? How did you overcome it and what have you learnt from it?
The biggest challenge for me was to develop interest in societies among my peers. When I joined college, the scene was as such, no student in the science course could be a member of any society as science students were always busy with academics. But with time, as I managed everything, I was able to show my peers that science students too could manage both academics and co-curricular activities simultaneously. As part of the marketing society,
I was the only student from science to be interviewed. I’m proud of myself since I could prove to all by being an example.
5. What are your career goals and how is what you are doing going to help you with that?
As part of my career goals, I want to enter the research field. I love learning about various topics in detail. The leadership qualities and the confidence I have gained will come in handy in the research field. For that matter in any field, unless a person is confident he or she cannot express themselves well. Moreover, these skills will be useful throughout my life as I pass through different stages.
6. What is your message to encourage students to do internships and attend conferences?
I can say that taking up internships and attending conferences are an integral part of college life. One develops many important skills and also learns many new things. So my message to other students like me would be taking guidance from your seniors and take up several internships, as many as you can get. But remember to pursue them further only if you enjoy them. Besides internships, conferences also provide a wonderful platform for a student to gain knowledge and perspective of the various possible fields, the people and the work they
do. Don’t miss these opportunities and make the best use of them. Best of luck for you future, readers! Stay positive always!
