1Tell us more about your role & responsibilities at your college.

I am Vidur Agarwal Chair and former Secretary of Graphic Era University ACM Student Chapter. GEU ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) brings together computing educators, researchers, and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources, and address the field's challenges.

As ACM is the world’s largest computing society, GEU ACM strengthens the profession's collective voice through strong leadership, promotion of the highest standards, and recognition of technical excellence. GEU ACM supports the professional growth of its members by providing opportunities for life‐long learning, career development, and professional networking.

My role is to organize technical workshops and events for skill development and help to build a coding community and to promote research. I am the representative of my Chapter so I have to take care of student’s interests in various fields and considering their interests I coordinate with my faculties for particular workshops or events.

I take care that each member of our chapter is learning new skills in his/her favorite fields and I try my level best to provide the resources. I take care of regular meetings and make sure that all the members can suggest their views and their suggestions are also considered.

2. How did you rise up to your position and how can a student aspiring the same, approach it?

I first became a member of this Chapter and after certain months when my faculties and my seniors noticed my hard work, they gave me the golden opportunity to become the Secretary of our Chapter and after that, I became the Chair just because of my hard work and honesty.

The piece of advice I want to give to all those who are reading my interview is College is a platform where we should focus on our academics as well as on our curricular activities also because it is better to be an all rounder than to be an ideal student with spectacles having full attention in class and not knowing anything outside of the class. We should try to build as many contacts as possible and it is possible only when we will join clubs related to our interests.

3. What have been some of your biggest challenges and learnings from what you do?

There are many challenges that I have faced in organizing events in college like getting permissions according to planned dates by the college management, convincing students that they should participate in these events because curricular activities play a crucial role in building personality, asking the members to volunteer with enthusiasm, coordinate the event with all other activities going on in college.

These challenges helped me a lot in learning many new things that I build a lot of contacts after joining the chapter, it is good for my CV also, not only I learned technical skills from other members but also learned how to do the teamwork which is very crucial in the corporate world.

4. What are your career goals and how is what you are doing going to help you with that?

I want to become Data Scientist and as a Chapter representative I have met many other people who are working in this field and have a lot of experience and it would be very difficult for a normal student to learn from these experienced ones without having good connections.

I have learned the importance of teamwork, speaking skills, punctuality, regularity, etc and these qualities are the building blocks of every successful person’s life.

5. Do you have a message for parents to allow their kids to do things besides academics?

I want to request all parents to support and motivate their wards to join the clubs in college so that they can polish their skills and learn new qualities which one cannot learn from books.

6.  What's your message to encourage students to do internships and attend conferences?

Students who are under the impression that they can get a good job just because of their academic performance are one hundred percent wrong because at the time of interview they not only need the toppers but they actually need the people who can think outside of the box and this quality can be developed by meeting new people and learning how they solve the particular problems. So one should participate in conferences also which helps us to meet new people and we can learn many new things from them.
