1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Born into a renowned musical family of Jammu, I always had an inclination towards music. Waking up to the serene sounds of my father Suraj Singh’s 'Riyaaz' every day, intrigued me to music.

But I was always fascinated by other creative aspects of the film world that made me learn Film and Video work professionally and explored it further by working under different media groups and presently working with 92.7 Big FM as an evening drive time Radio Jockey.

My show runs in Jammu, Himachal, Chandigarh, and Punjab. And in this pandemic, I am working with my sister ( Juhi Singh )in a Folk Singing project which has a motto to bring upward our Culture and language, Dogri.

2. Why did you choose RJ as a career and what were the first steps you took?

I remember it was 2008 when Big FM came to Jammu and I was studying in a school at that time. So I started listening to Big FM and eventually when you listen to something regularly, you become a part of it.

So one day I called my favorite Radio jockey because I was a huge fan of him and when he picked up the call and I said Hi. Is this you? (My favorite RJ). The voice I heard was of him but he said "No, he is not available right now".

But you know, when you listen to someone regularly you recognize the voice but I felt sad and I asked myself Aise Kaise ho Sakta hai? (How is this possible?) and then I made a promise to myself that one day I will become a radio jockey.

  1. Never lose your focus.
  2. Always remember the law of attraction: Kisi cheez ko pure dil se chaho to puri Qaynaat tumhe use milaane ki saazish me lag jati hai (When you are passionate about something, Universe would definitely help you).
  3. Be Honest

3. What challenges can one face during live calls?

There can be many but what I have faced during the live calls is sometimes, technical glitches due to weather. But I always talk to my listeners in a very polite manner. Sometimes people do play with you but you just need to relax and be humorous if something goes wrong.

4. What are the skills required to be a radio jockey?

The most important skill required to be a good RJ is to be a good communicator. Being enthusiastic and well informed also plays a crucial role in this profession. It is rightly said that "Destiny has its own ways" and I truly believe that Destiny has an important role in this vocation.

5. Does one also need to be tech-savvy in this field?

Absolutely on the radio, you have to be tech-savvy. There is no doubt about that and if you are coming to this field then you need to be more updated about the radio equipment, software. But I believe in this era everyone is tech-savvy so it's not a big problem.

6. What kind of books do you prefer to read?

I read non-fiction and recently I have finished Malcolm Gladwell’s: "Talking To Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know (2019)"

7. What makes a person connect with their audience as an RJ?

The audience must be involved with you and these days Radio is digital. We have social media handles and I regularly talk to them but the only thing is Don’t lie to your Audience.
