Insights on Instagram by an Influencer: Sohaima Ali

What led you to start your page on Instagram and what is it about?
While in college everyone kept complimenting my sense of style, how I carry all the outfits, and how my fashion game is always on point. They’d keep asking me to start my fashion blog. But I really wasn’t sure because I felt I did not fit in the category of the ‘perfect body type’. In the end, that’s what made me realize that people would relate with me more than the picture-perfect influencers and models we have grown up admiring. So one day I just let go of my inhibitions and put myself out there. It all started with me posting my OOTDs.
My page is all about my personal style, something which people can easily adapt and incorporate in their daily lives. They could cling onto it. It’s extremely wearable and do’able. It is not just for the gram but for people who can carry it in their day to day lives.

How would you distinguish the term blogger from an influencer?
A blogger is someone who runs a blog and publishes their blogs on blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogspot, etc.
Whereas an influencer is someone who has the ability to influence people. Influencers have quite a lot of following and have the power to influence their followers in the actions they take. An influencer may use blogs, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, youtube.
Bloggers can often be called influencers too.

Is it financially sustainable to be an influencer today?
The market for influencers is expanding daily and the base is vast. So it is very much financially sustainable to be an influencer. Having said that I would also like to add before just jumping into the market, do your survey, know about how things work, plan things out and it’s always good to have an extra source of income. As I said the market is huge, there are lakhs of influencers and thousands who aspire to be one too, so the competition is crazy. Decide your niche and work on it. When you start, do things that make your content stand out. Have a backup.

What do you think influences consumer behavior?
I think what truly influences consumers in today’s market is the relatability quotient. Something which people can relate to and which also inspires them at the same time.

I have recently completed my grad in mass comm and journalism. Currently, I am working with my father in our exports and logistics business. I run my fashion blog on Instagram and aspire to take it to the next level.

Your opinion on Instagram contemplating removing likes option for posts.
I think it’s a great move to do that because many of us keep validating ourselves through the no of likes we get. Often others too judge our content no matter how good it is, on the basis of the no of likes we get.

What is your idea of success or your mantra in life?
I truly believe in the idea of doing what you love and loving what you do. That’s what keeps you driven and consistent. Once you do all of that it truly keeps you happy and content. It’s like a cycle.
