Don't Be Shy to Start Posting Your Artworks - Lisa Volkova

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

My name is Lisa Volkova, I'm 21y.o. I am a designer and artist from Kyiv, Ukraine. I'm working as a Graphical and Motion designer, in my free time I'm creating videos where I'm turning cartoon characters into celebrities.

By the way, currently, I'm getting my Masters Degree in the Applied Math field. Science will always be my passion but earning money I prefer with my hobby.

2. When did you decide you wanted to be an artist?

I was grown up by my mother and she always supported my interest in drawing. Mom bought me all materials artists use. She even allowed me to paint flowers on the walls in my room.

My first job was as a Software Developer. After a year of work, I realized that I wasn't happy doing that job. I was looking for something related to my hobbies, something more artistic. I got interested in Graphical design and Digital art.

I found first projects with drawing portraits and the work process gave me lots of pleasure. Then I realized that making money with my hobby is possible. I had lots of ideas and started to post videos with the drawing process, lots of them became viral.

I'm surrounded by loving people who support me all the time and that gives me inspiration and motivation to create!

3. Is it a financially stable career?

Yes, the blog helped me to become more recognizable. My first client found me when I had 300 followers. Now I have lots of projects from clients all over the world!

4. Who is your favorite artist and why?

I have always been interested in art, Claude Monet, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, I tried to redraw their famous paintings with pencil and oil paints. But now I'm learning lots of tips from the cartoon's animators like Britney Lee.

I'm learning modern styles of character drawings and in my posts, I'm trying to stick to the style of Disney.

5. Where do you get inspired to create art?

I have lots of favorite musicians, singers, actors, characters who inspire me with their looks, songs, and videos. I pick my favorite celebrities, find characters who fit the best, and start to create.

6. What does your typical day look like?

It starts with cooking breakfast for me and my husband. Then we go for a walk on the river band. Both of us are working remotely during the quarantine. Daily I am completing some projects creating logos, mobile app designs, portraits. Sometimes I work until late at night to finish the project.

In the evening thrice a week we go to the gym and swimming pool. We love late walks in our area, we are living in a beautiful place so we pick our self made 500 cards with words in English on the one side and Russian on the other and learn them during the stroll.

We are preparing for the IELTS exam and nothing is better than regular practice and fulfilling your dictionary.

7. What piece of advice would you like to give to future aspiring artists?

Don't be shy to start posting your artworks! I was dreaming for my whole life to create my own page with arts, to become like those popular artists on the internet, to get the audience. One day I just filmed the first video and posted it.

Now I have 30k followers and a supportive audience. Your skills will become better from day to day. The hardest is the first 1k of followers! Just continue working, and remember that haters are the first sign of success.

8. Which is your favorite book and why?

My one of most favorite books is "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!". It tells about the adventures of the curious winner of the Nobel Prize in physics Richard Feynman.

This book inspires the reader to become curious and never stop asking questions. To find new ideas and inspirations from ordinary things and never stop chasing your aims.
