1.Tell us about your background and journey
Before becoming a skincare expert, I was a regular consumer. I had horrific acne and knew what it felt like to be teased in school or hate my reflection in the mirror. I would go to the store and purchase any products that someone told me would work, only to be disappointed.
As I tried to cover up my acne with makeup, I started searching online for other people talking about products, to get actual reviews before I purchased my own. After seeing so much great content, I wanted to be a part of the community.
I wanted to have similar friendships and really looked up to the girls who were sharing things online. Nobody else had acne, so I started to share my skin, my struggles, and the products that did and didn’t work for me.
2. What led you to start your channel on youtube and what is it about?
When I first started my YouTube channel back in 2010, it was a cry for help. It was me reaching out and wanting to find community and similar interests with others online because I couldn’t find that in my real life.
When my video about acne became viral on the Internet, I started focusing on cosmetics to cover up blemishes and skin conditions. Many people thought that I was a makeup channel and because I focused on makeup. Yes, that’s partially true, but my passion has always been with skin science.
As I furthered myself in my career, becoming a medical aesthetician and stuttering other areas of nutrition, cosmetic chemistry, and biochemistry, I gained more insights into skincare and decided to focus on that on my channel as well.
It’s made me happier, more interested in the content I create, and I’m so happy that my audience agrees!
3. How and where do you find inspiration to churn out content?
Most of my content comes from questions that my audience has or experiences that I have had! We all have skin concerns, product questions, or other curiosities that need answers.
My goal is to help demystify Skincare and help others understand their routines and embrace their beauty.
4. What are some of your top makeup tips?
When it comes to makeup, some of my top tips are understanding your skin type. Great skin is the foundation for a great makeup!
Additionally, ensure that you are layering your cosmetics. The more gentle layers you apply, the more you are able to create a blur to the skin.
We’re not talking cake face, but we’re talking strategic layers of concealer, primers, or foundations to make sure that you craft your skin into the look you’re going for!
5. How would you define feminist and what steps should be taken for women empowerment?
I would define a feminist as who understands and works for the equality of women. Someone who understands the struggles, the needs for equality, and speaks up about these issues. I believe that as women we should all empower each other, and that means taking the time to learn about each other.
Embracing our differences. Speaking up for the needs of others, particularly when things go wrong. Making sure that we respect women’s rights to their bodies, how they choose to dress, and of course things such as wage disparities or opportunistic disparities, or even the role that women have within a household.
It’s about understanding these, exploring these, and accepting them. I think the first step is not judging others for the choices that they truly make. And working to empower them, based on their own decisions.
6. How do you define success for yourself?
Some of my core values are helping others and solving problems. When I am able to do these things, I feel fulfilled in my own life, and I believe that this is how I do find my own success as well.
Many people like to look at numbers or influence, but truly I know what it feels like to be that acne suffers from horrible skin and low self-esteem.
If I can help somebody understand their skincare, and help them find confidence through those struggles, I feel that is a success that no amount of numbers, followers, or likes could ever amount to.
7. Which is your favorite book and why?
It’s difficult for me to choose a favorite book! I find so many helpful ideas, concepts, and words in different texts, and I always have at least three books on my nightstand!
Recently I’ve been reading Skincare by Caroline Hirons which is a beautiful synopsis of her expertise in the industry, as well as a nice round-up of some of the ideas she shares in her blog posts from the past decade or so!
8. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring creators?
The advice I would give to other creators is to make sure that you are aligned with your passion. It’s really hard to wake up and do something every single day if you don’t enjoy it.
I know that there is pressure to fit in, follow trends, or look/act like others, but I truly believe that if you pave your own path, people will not only see that but be inspired by your freedom and creativity. Even if you have quirks, those make you human.
Know what your values are, know what your passions are, and use those to create things that inspire others, as well as yourself.
