Writing Is an Act of Revolution - Livia Messias (Brazilian Author)

Livia Messias

Lívia Messias is the author of 5 books, all written in Portuguese, the native language of this Brazilian who was born in Recife, Pernambuco.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I am from Brazil, born in Recife city. I have a degree in Business Administration and a PG in Management Education. I am also an Editor and a Writer of 5 books (and counting). I usually say that I am Administrator by formation and Writer by vocation.

Since I was a child the habit of reading was present in my family. My maternal grandfather was a poet and he was the one who incentivized me most to write poetry. When I was 8, our favorite game was to rhyme words. I used to read his poetry out loud like a recital.

Since then I have lived my childhood and teenage writing poems and tales. Upon entering college I stopped writing and returned after a dream I had about a magic dress. This interesting dream became O Vestido de Trinta Rosas (The Thirty Roses Dress) a Children-Youth’s Book. This was the start and here I am.

2. When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

After that first book, I wrote a second book named O Jardineiro (The Gardener) and decided to participate in the XII International Book Biennial of Pernambuco (2015).

As my first time in such a big event like this, I used social media to invite other authors to be with me. Nine people together, all debuting authors. This was my turning point. There I wanted to be a full-time writer.

3. Is it a financially stable career?

Not for me yet. Being a Brazilian writer is not an easy task. Brazil is not a country with a large readership and I have to dispute my national space with innumerable international best-sellers. Even so, we are changing this reality each day and soon I will have a different answer to this question.

4. Who is your favourite writer and why?

Among all my favourite writers is Raphael Montes because he is a true source of inspiration. He is where I would like to be a Brazilian author.

5. Where does your inspiration lie?

In people and our great and real power to change the world especially through words.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future aspiring writers?

Do not judge your work so hard. Writing is an act of revolution. It's a voice you give to yourself. Every word you write changes something inside you. That is nothing short of incredible!

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

I have so many favourite books but I keep O Rapto do Garoto de Ouro - in a free translation The Kidnaping of the Golden Boy (Marcos Rey, 1991) - as the one who aroused my passion for detective novels even though I don't write this genre (yet).
