Afsheen Owais - To Handle Your PPD, You Have to Push Yourself To Come Out of It (Influencer)

Afsheen Owais

My whole motive to start this space was to make me feel good about myself and to create a distinct identity of my own rather than just being a mom.

1. Tell us something about your Background and Journey?

I am an Australian/Pakistani mom based in UAE who loves to share her motherhood and food journey. Being the youngest of all siblings I was the most pampered. When I moved to Sydney after marriage I was on my own with a newborn.

In the struggle to fight with my postpartum depression thats when I started documenting my cooking and baking. One fine day made a wordpress blog and an Instagram page and that was the start of "Blessed with the best Mommy".

2. What inspired you to start your page on Instagram?

Because I was handling a whole household for the first time that too with a newborn, I wanted to spend less time in kitchen. That inspired me to come up with easiest version of recipes and started sharing hacks to make other's people life easy.

3. What type of Cuisine do you enjoy the most making and why?

I love making easy versions of Pakistani cuisines and all kind of desserts. I have a big sweet tooth and enjoy them during my me time.

4. You talked about PPD in one of your posts, how did you deal with it?

PPD is still one of those topics people hardly talk about. My whole motive to start this space was to make me feel good about myself and to create a distinct identity of my own rather than just being a mom. I confined in my husband and make him understand how I felt. He was my support and the listening ear. I started baking and that kept me busy. Started frequent visits to library to resume my love for reading. Inshort to handle your PPD, you have to push yourself come out of it.

5. What are your thoughts on Dieting?

I believe everyone has different tendency to react to different food and metabolism. For me I am lucky enough to have a slim built which allows me to indulge in guilty food pleasures. I think everything should be consumed in a certain limit but not hardcore dieting where you totally stop consuming food groups.

6. What is your idea of Success?

Success for me is the feeling when someone can relate to me. As a social media person if someone comes to me and say that my words made a difference in their life or they share their feedback for my recipes, thats what success is to me.

7. Who inspires you the most and why?

That would be my Mom. Her life is also somewhat like me only tougher with 4 kids and whatever little cooking I know is because of the basics she taught me.

8. Which is your favorite book and why?

There are many. Some of my favourite writers in Urdu language are Umera Ahmed and Farhat Ishtiaque. In English I enjoy Khalid Hosseini, Paulo Coelho and Elif Shafak.
