A Beginner's Guide to UPSC Preparation



UPSC is India’s most important examination for all those who desire to serve in the administration of India. This examination has taken inspiration from China’s Keju exam, which began during the Han Dynasty.


Three levels of UPSC examination


The UPSC examination has three levels each having its unique importance. 

  • The first level is prelims, this is a basic qualification examination, that deals with the knowledge of basic subjects and current affairs of both national and international origin.

  • The second level is mains, it is more of an intellectual knowledge exam and covers a vast subject knowledge. Most important and interesting in this is the essay writing exam, taking inspiration from China’s Confucian text.

  • The last and main level is the interview round. This can also be said to be a personality round, in which the interviewee tests the problem solving, analytical and confidence-building round.


Upon clearing these three levels, an aspirant moves to LSBSNAA where she/he does basic training, and then move to respective institutes where their further final training of 2 year period takes place, after which they are posted.



Some tips and tricks for a beginner in UPSC Preparation:


  • Analyze and Understand Syllabus - Read the syllabus thoroughly, try and understand all the topics and subjects and what they focus on.
  • Read all NCERT’s of class 6-12 - NCERT is the key. They help you get a basic understanding of subjects and clear your topics before you start with the main books. Do not skip them.
  • Read the newspaper on daily basis preferable - The Hindu and Times of India. Newspaper reading is helpful not just for prelims but also for mains and interview. It keeps you aware of what is going on in-country related to political social-economic issues.
  • Read the main books - Before making notes of main books, read them thrice understand and then write and make notes that are easy to understand and learn.
  • Makes short and proper notes.
  • Practice essay writing on daily basis.
  • Keep an eye on the international and national events of political, economic importance.
  • Upon completing the syllabus, the key is to revise.



Revision is the key. It makes you remember the subject and its content thoroughly 

  • Practice last year's question papers.
  • Practicing question paper will help you build your answer writing skills and also will help you to learn to manage time during examinations.
  • Keep strong you got it.


These are some of the tips that one can follow as a beginner’s tip to UPSC. Being a lengthy exam all it asks for is time and proper attention. Once you achieve your dream it all becomes worth the hard work and missed parties.


UPSC is not a go-to thing, that you can just start a month before, it asks for dedication, sacrifice, and attention. It asks for your loyalty towards it. 


You need not take coaching classes worth lakhs to clear this exam. Preparation at home with complete determination will help you and who knows you can be the youngest IPS, IAS officer of the time.
