You don’t have to be a pro at everything. Find “your thing” and run with it! I love to focus on skin, so when I was starting out I would keep the eyes more simple, and I feel like I was able to build a clientele around what I was great at. As I began to become more advance in my skills, that s when I would get more intricate when it came to eyes, etc.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
I grew up dancing, so from a very young age I was always putting makeup on for the stage and performances! I loved how I was able to be anyone I wanted while on stage, and so I pretty much drew that parallel to makeup also being a form of self expression.
I was always person all of my friends and family came to, to get their makeup done, but because, growing up, I didn’t know anyone in the makeup industry, I didn’t know much about pursuing it as a career.
I ended up graduating from the University of Miami with a double major Bachelor’s Degree in both Public Relations, and Sports Administration — I know, so different from a career in makeup — and getting a corporate marketing job. Needless to say, this just was not my passion, so after a year of working in the office setting, I decided to quit my day job to go after my dreams of having a career in makeup!
I told myself I would set a list goals for the first year of my makeup career, if I achieved them all it was meant to be, if not, then at least I have my degree to fall back on. I started an Instagram, a You tube channel, a blog, I began promoting myself locally as a makeup artist, and at the end of the year, I achieved all of my initial goals. I could have never imagined this would all lead to me created and launching my own beauty tool, Crease Piece, but I guess the rest is history!
2. Why did you chose this career?
I chose a career in makeup because I am truly passionate about it! Makeup, to me, is all about self expression, and the more I wore makeup, the more I appreciated my own beauty with and without it. Being able to share these same experiences with hundreds of clients is priceless! There is nothing better than knowing that you helped someone feel so confident in their own skin!
3. How can one build a clientele as a makeup artist?
I began building my clientele by word of mouth and Instagram. Referrals are the best because you know that you had to have really made someone feel and look their absolute best for them to share your information with their friends and family!
Instagram always helps as well this way clients have a place to go to see your work. By using local hashtags like #NYMUA, #LAmakeupartist, or something along those lines, it really helps for the people who just don’t know where to look.
4. What are some of your top makeup tips?
Some of my top makeup tips would be,
Take care of your skin. A proper skincare routine really helps in how the makeup lays on, and gets worked into, the skin!
5. What kind of job opportunities one can get after becoming a make up artist?
I definitely do not think I was aware of all of the possible ways you can take a career in makeup. You can go the freelancing route, which encompasses everything from bridal, to events, to red carpets, to print work, to photo and video shoots.
Anyone or any situation that may possibly need a makeup artist, you’re able to do as a freelance artist. You can also go the social media route, where you can create content for your followers and various brands to educate about various techniques and products.
In my experience, many freelancers also dabble in the content creation part of the industry, but it is a bit less likely that those who focus primarily on the social media route also freelance.
6. Which professional courses would you suggest for aspiring artists?
You know, I took two weeks of formal courses, and it was good, however I feel that I have learnt the most from experience and from other makeup artists that I admire. If I know a makeup artists I look up to is hosting a class, I’ll go, or watch videos from it.
Also, assisting has been the most unbelievable and valuable experience. Learning directly under a makeup artist who I truly look up to, has changed the products I use and the techniques in which I apply the products to myself and clients.
7. Which is your favorite book and why?
This is a tough one because I typically like to use reading as a bit of an escape from everyday life, so I definitely like to read more romantic fiction novels. The Twilight Saga was definitely what got me into reading while I was in high school, but I have read so many great books since then that it is hard to choose!
I have come to appreciate the nonfiction books as well, though! I am currently reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle, and I absolutely love it! The whole message of tapping into your greatest potential when you’re being who you truly are meant to be, is beyond inspiring!
