Behind Closed Doors has to be one of the most intense books you will come across. It is a thriller in which you will be on the side of the murderer and worried that she may not get away with it. The plot is basic. Most people know a perfect couple and most people may know a couple who are perhaps too perfect. In the case of the Angels, husband Jack is a perfect host in social terms and apparently devoted to his pretty wife Grace. He is sympathetic to her problems with her sister Millie who has Down syndrome. He buys the family a lovable dog called Molly. In his legal work, he defends battered women.
Thoughts While Reading the Book
It’s hard for us to use words like “enjoyed” or phrases like “I loved it” with this kind of book. The story presented in Behind Closed Doors is deeply disturbing yet utterly compelling. It’s hard to read at times, but it can be difficult for us to put it down. The psychological abuse that Grace faces is nauseating, and you can have an urge to see how it would all end.
Jack is easily one of the vilest characters you ever read, constantly taking his even one step further until you couldn’t turn the pages fast enough just to make sure Grace would be okay. You can end up reading the last three hundred pages in one sitting and staying up way past your bedtime but it’s worth it just to get to that ending.
About the Characters
The characters are everything in this book. Grace can steal your heart. I have heard that others get frustrated with some of her decisions while reading. Her situation can be so awful for you that you have absolutely no clue how you would react. In my opinion she isn’t weak, just scared and unable to escape but always trying.
Jack is a true villain of the story and fell so real that he can be terrifying to read about. But one of the favorite characters are Millie, Grace’s sister, and Esther, Grace’s new friend. They are so pivotal to the story; you will love every moment that either of the was on the page. You can see yourself reflected in them, how they cared about Grace and just wanted her to be safe.
After-Effects of This Book
This book can really dig into your mind and make you think. It can be infuriating to read about people ignoring Grace’s cries for help, but is that how it really is in the world we live in? That question can haunt you almost as much as the story itself. There comes one part that involves a dog. So, it’s a warning here for those who can’t stomach reading about animal cruelty. But for the most part this book is not physically violent on the page, it’s all psychological.
Behind Closed Doors is a solid four-star read until you get to the last few pages. After you read the ending you will be left stunned. The author pulled off one of those “you have to read it to believe it endings” and you will love it. The attention to detail, the payoff, it will totally blow you away and I put the book down utterly satisfied by how it wrapped everything up. I highly recommend Behind Closed Doors, but with the disclaimer that it’s not an easy read. It is, though, a story that’s going to stick with you for a very long time.
