About the Book

The story starts with our protagonist Percy Jackson. Middle school is not a playhouse kind of thing and especially when you are in your adolescence, galloping hormones and embarrassing adults collide. And above all that you have been diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD together, and one of your teachers turns into a monster who wants to kill you? And guess what you are still 12 years old without any clue. This is the situation that our protagonist is going through.

After witnessing his maths teacher turning into a monster, it was not so long that he was bombarded by breath-taking truths. He got to know about his parentage that he is not a pure human, his mother is human but his dad is one of the trinity of Greek gods, Poseidon. About his diagnosis which showed him that he has dyslexia and the reason, Percy has trouble reading? His mind is hard-wired to read the ancient Greek language.

After knowing all about his truths he was taken to a place where he found other children like him, they all were demigods having one parent as human and one a god. Finally, he was at the place where he always belonged as he felt. The camp where all the demigods stayed was attacked by monsters even after that place is protected by a mystical tree who once was a demigod herself named Thalia and a daughter of Zeus. After that attack, Percy realized that even being a demigod won’t make life easier.

Even as Percy reels at his new demigod reality, he is given a task of grave importance. He must travel across the U.S to retrieve Zeus’ master lightning bolt which was stolen recently and it seems to result in a civil war between gods. He got some company with him in his quest, Grover who is a kind satyr, and Annabeth, daughter of Athena join him in his journey to the underworld.

The story is full of ups and downs, thrill and suspense at every chapter which you’ll get to know once you read it by yourself.

Review

This is the first book of the series by award winning mystery writer Rick Riordan. In this novel, he has mixed two completely different things resulting in a whole new setup. This book is neither completely based on mythology nor on modern-day childhood hurdles but it’s a blend of both hence a reader can enjoy the fiction while relating it with reality.

Riordan created his characters so beautifully and gave life to them with a proper story. During the journey, Percy and his mates develop a strong bond and realized that being different and not just a normal human is a thing to be celebrated and with this, they were given some responsibilities they must never abandon.

The story is not exactly about good vs bad but every character is well explained with his/her character and their goals do have a reason no matter they seem good or evil at first. This tale tells us that almost every one of us has a weak spot and sometimes even that can be your greatest strength. The lessons to learn from this story are hidden between the lines and that is another reason to read this novel.

This story is fast-paced so reading it in so many slots will ruin the fun and the excitement. I’ll recommend reading it in a few slots as you can. This is wonderfully written in the first person and makes the perfect read for Potterheads. I’ll surely recommend everyone to give it a try.
