Hriday Gattani

I soon realized I had a natural aptitude for it when I learned the guitar all by myself and started understanding musical theory a little further. To start I needed some guidance, I shared one of my youtube videos with Rahman sir by email, and to my surprise, he replied with positive encouragement and asked me to learn further by coming to his school in Chennai. I immediately shifted to Chennai and started my Journey at KM School of Music and Technology.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

My Tryst with the Entertainment industry started at a very early age. I was exposed to a lot of concerts and live entertainment growing up because of my father Deepak Gattani. also a strong sense of musicality was introduced to me through my parent's love for music.

I was always awed by technology and growing up I always felt I will do something that bridges technology and entertainment together. I studied in Bombay at Jamnabai Narsee School and graduated with a Bachelor of Mass Media from National College.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?

Always had a band in school and enjoyed singing and performing for people. I discovered I could sing because after seeing all those concerts, I wanted to perform. But it was in college that I realized the true value of my love for music and what it could be.

I soon realized I had a natural aptitude for it when I learnt the guitar all by myself and started understanding musical theory a little further. To start I needed some guidance, I shared one of my youtube videos with Rahman sir by email, and to my surprise, he replied with positive encouragement and asked me to learn further by coming to his school in Chennai. 3. Who is your favorite artist and why?

I have many and all for different reasons. Starting with of course my mentor Rahman sir has been someone who has been an inspiration to musicians around the globe and for me, he has been that and also an inspiration of a human being. apart from his musical genius, I love Rahman sir for the spiritual humble and ever helpful being he is.

I have grown up listening to The Beatles and Pink Floyd and I loved the compositions from that day and age. I am a huge fan of John Mayer and Coldplay. I have loved them for their songwriting and John for his Gtr Playing, he was the one I looked up to while teaching myself the guitar and last but not the least Sonu Nigam and Mohit Chauhan I love their expression as singers and from all these people I have imbibed my musicality and still continue to do so.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

There are a lot of opportunities now with the influx of Social Media, you can sit at home and be noticed. We are in the stage where Content is booming and growing. We see new platforms and Genres coming out from all fields of media that this is a great time to be a part of this industry.

5. Is formal training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

Formal training is very important, it sets a great foundation for you as an artist to then break free and do what you like and express truly with your art form. But evolving is very important. Music is so vast even a lifetime of training is never enough to know it all and I feel it's important to keep learning as you go and be open minded to Evolve, Learn and Create.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

The word is ‘Independent’. That is definitely the future of music and most singers/musicians should work towards that and that doesn't mean releasing your own music but being able to be a complete musician who can write, play and create music.

If you are a singer, learn an instrument, it will only help you further and give you room to explore, also then you do not have to depend on a musician or music director to necessarily help you create.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

I'm not much of a reader, I have always struggled with being an academic. But I thought I should start a few years ago and picked up this book that was highly recommended to me called ‘Sapiens’. Just Loved it, I felt more connected to my primal being. Also, I read some Poetry here and there to keep my lyric writing process fuelled.
