About the Story - Spoiler Alert!

Irul is a psychological thriller film which can really mess with the audience’s head. The movie begins with Alex waking up from a nightmare. Alex is a budding novelist, who recently wrote the book, Irul, which talks about a serial killer who tortures women.

Alex and his girlfriend, Archana, meet at a cafe where Archana seems to be constantly distracted with her office work. Frustrated by this, Alex leaves and later on the couple plan a small getaway to escape the city rush. The rule in this getaway is to have no mobile phones.

While driving to the surprise location, their car malfunctions. They are unable to call for help as they don't have their phones on them. The only logical idea that comes upon Archana’s mind is to walk towards a mansion they spot. Upon reaching that place they meet the owner of the house who seemed suspicious in odd ways.

They share a few words and Alex comes to know that the owner has read his book. The owner heavily criticizes the book saying that the emotions in the book aren't real and it needs to be more psychologically strong. This comes to Alex as sort of offensive.

Soon after due to the thunderstorm they encounter a short circuit. Hence, Alex and the owner go to the basement to check the fuse. There in the basement after fixing the fuse, Alex sees a dead body and shrieks. After this the scene cuts to Archana who hears a gunshot.

In the next scene is where the confusion begins. Alex enters the room along with the unconscious owner (who came to be known as Unni) and starts tying him up. Archana asked Alex in confusion what he was doing. Alex replied saying that Unni was actually the serial killer he wrote about in his book.

But then Unni wakes up and starts begging Alex to let him go, which comes off as a confusion to both Alex and Archana. Unni starts saying that he's just a mere thief who came to steal and says that the real owner of this house is Alex. Archana is startled as Alex agrees to it.

Unni says that Alex is the original serial killer. Alex keeps on protesting that he is not the killer, but all the arguments and proofs proposed by Unni suggest the opposite.

In the end Archana along with the audience watching is convinced that Alex is the original killer.

But then the real twist comes in where Unni reveals that he is the original serial killer and kills Archana.

The Bottom Line

The idea and the story of the film is compelling. However it has a lot of loose ends and unanswerable questions like, if the house was originally owned by Alex, how did he not have his keys? and how come the couple happened to see the exact house Alex was planning to take Archana to?

There are many such questions linked with the plot for which the answers are not found. The story also loses its grip somewhere along the line.

If you want to spend a Sunday afternoon watching something which will make you grab your pillows in suspense, then I would suggest you watch this movie.
