TV Series Review: ‘Game of Thrones’ - The Fiery Tale of Winter

“Money buys a man’s silence for a time. A bolt in the heart buys it forever.”

And indeed, the silence was bought by numerous bolts in numerous hearts with some neck-slashing, head-crushing, poisoning and stabbing in the mix. Any gore you possibly can or cannot imagine is in abundance in Game of Thrones.

I mean, it is a show about wars for the throne so it's bound to be utterly brutal, certainly not for the faint of heart. Beware, there are no blurry squares to cover up the gushing blood or the untangling intestines or the love-making for that matter. It’s really difficult to write about this show without giving away any spoilers but I'll try my best.

The World of Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire and the show is named after the first book of the series. The first episode premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and concluded on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes broadcast over eight seasons.

The show is set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos with medievalist visuals. The major noble families or “Houses” are- the sibling-loving Lannisters, the honourable Starks and the almost extinct, fiery Targaryens.

The first of the three major story arcs follows the political conflicts amongst the noble families to covet the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, the next is about the comeback of the exiled House Targaryen and the third arc chronicles the coming of the much awaited and talked-about winter.

Every show and film has a main character and then some less important side characters. But here, there is no main character, everybody is a side character even in their own stories. When you begin to think that “oh the story is surely about this person”, there’s a 99.9% chance of that character dying in the next episode.

When you think “oh this person’s nice, i like them”, next thing you know, you’re either watching them spill their guts out or slashing someone else’s. And if you don’t like a character, that one’s probably going to live for a good while, and who knows, might even become a king or a queen.

Every character’s on a journey of their own. That’s the kind of show it is. Just as Cersei Lannister said,

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.”

So don’t dig your own grave and get attached to any character, even if it’s the nicest one around. Just don’t. Everybody in the world of Game of Thrones is just a push away from complete madness, many are already pretty insane but they’ll still go out of their way to amplify that insanity.

The show never ceases to amaze you, it always gives you the absolutely unexpected and unpredictable. The conspiracies and numerous sudden deaths just show us the brutal reality of life, that good people die exactly the same way bad people do, that life isn’t a movie and there won’t be any miracles to save you at the last second.

They all have dark pasts and dirty secrets they’re trying to hide and there’s always someone lurking in the shadows to take advantage of it. George R. R. Martin’s mind from which such a story sprouted, is purely fantastic and in my opinion, even slightly twisted.

Characters You Will Love

There is a fine line between loving and hating a character of this show. George R. R. Martin really has a talent for creating such contrasting, realistic characters full of worldly desires and the iron will to pursue them.

Jon Snow (Kit Harrington): He is the bastard son of Ned Stark, the head of House Stark. Apparently, Jon Snow is a man who knows nothing. That’s why you’ll love him. He is the most straight-laced and normal person you’ll see in the show. After every episode, I was always grateful that he lived yet another day.

“Sometimes there is no happy choice. Only one less grievous than the others”

Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage): He is the ugly duckling of House Lannister but certainly far superior than any of them. I started liking him the moment he slapped Joffrey, his nephew and the character I wanted to be killed a hundred times. From then on, Tyrion never made me doubt my admiration.

“That’s what I do. I drink and I know things.”

Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke): The girl who suffered a lot. She is the last of the Targaryens and wishes to take the Iron Throne that she believes belongs to her. She is the feminist of the show. The most fierce woman with a “takes no bs” attitude and a different kind of madness in her. I absolutely loved her.

“I will do what queens do. I will rule.”

Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau): Considering how repulsive Lannisters are, it’s a surprise two of them made it to this list. Jamie, a.k.a Kingslayer, an actual knight in shining armor, is Tyrion’s older brother and the star child of the Lannister family. In the beginning I disliked him but the character development he got was amazing and he ended up being one of my favourite characters. Cersei didn’t deserve him.

“We don’t choose whom we love”

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams): The rebel daughter of Ned Stark, always running away from her duties as House Stark’s young lady to practice shooting arrows and swinging swords. Her journey was the most interesting one for me. She went from being a mischievous little lady to a ruthless assassin and finally an explorer by the end.

“What do we say to the god of death?”

“Not today”

The Bottom Line

The show isn’t solely about sorcery and magical creatures, this is not Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. The story is more about the wars and mind-games and magic is just a small subtle part of it all.

It embodies that good guys don’t always win and are even downright stupid and bad guys don’t always lose but sometimes are actually likable. The show has everything to keep you on the edge of your seat. You can stream it on Hotstar.
