Some people really enjoy the drive when they see the leads in their pipelines get converted to an actual business and it gives them a quick. that too is a clear-cut sign that you're made for this role.

1. Tell us more about your journey and your company.

So my professional journey hasn't been the typical run-of-the-mill kind. I have been drawn towards purpose-driven projects, which has led me to gain extensive experience in launching and scaling P&Ls of various different business models. Over the past few years I have been running a joint venture in Bali, Indonesia called Dragoon Yachts.

We sold the boat last year and moved on to a marketplace model. I have since then started 'Meteor Venture', an accelerator & investor network that works with disruptive startups across various sectors & geographies. My co-founders are Sonal Agarwal (Ex CFO OYO) and Vipin Verma (Ex IBM/ Entrepreneur), both of them veterans in their respective fields.

Vipin actually bought affiliate marketing to India over a decade back and has since then perfected the art to generate vetted and solid leads for any and all businesses. We have multiple companies in our portfolio, to whom we provide the following services:

A. Raise Capital: The Rise Capital program helps startups in raising the money needed for their business in the most efficient way by dedicating a seasoned team for that. Some of our recent fundings have been in companies such as Ezyschooling, Klassroom, Dragoon, and many more.

2. What is a typical role of a BD person in any organization?

A business development person in our company is also called the ROCKSTAR because he is the one who maintains rapport with our angel investors and keeps them updated on the progress of our portfolio startups. He is also in charge to onboard new investors and apprises them of our way of working. Along with that, he gathers data, monitors growth, and presents it to our management.

3. What skills does one need to make a career in BD/Sales?
  1. Believing in the product
  2. Communication
  3. Prospecting
  4. Business Acumen
  5. Storytelling
  6. Objection Handling
  7. Negotiation Skills
  8. Time Management and Planning
4. Could you share some generic tips for lead conversion?

It's vital to listen and understand the needs of the customer, we come across various different startups from all sorts of sectors, and the thing that differentiates the successful ones are their focused ability to actually listen to the pain points of the customer. These companies are able to then, customize and position their products in such a way that their clients have no other option but to purchase them.

5. How can one know if they have a knack for BD and will enjoy the role?

Well if you can consistently make 80+ cold calls in a day and be prepared for rejection from say 50% of them and still be at it day after day. I would say you got the knack for it. Some people really enjoy the drive when they see the leads in their pipelines get converted to an actual business and it gives them a quick. that too is a clear-cut sign that you're made for this role.

6. Which is your favorite book and why?

There are so many, it's hard to choose one - but at this moment, I would say - "Without their permission" by Alexis Ohanian

Alexis co-founded the immensely popular company called Reddit.com. This is his personal guidebook as to how other aspiring entrepreneurs can follow in his footsteps. This book is meant for entrepreneurs at all stages to truly understand how to use the internet as the most powerful and democratic tool for disseminating information. It's a powerful read and had helped me immensely when I was starting my entrepreneurial journey.
