Sowmya Iyer - In The Next 5-10 Years, I Aim To Become Not Only The National Player But An International Brand (Founder & CEO, India)

Clarity PR is a new age PR agency working for start-ups and other diversified industry domain. In light of my 20 years of experience in PR, I have perceived a gap between what is promised and delivered to clients. Therefore, when it came to Clarity PR, I wanted to bridge this gap with transparency and expertise. Moreover, I observed that the critical role of employees was typically undermined despite having exceeding performance expectations. In Clarity PR, I ensure that every employee’s contribution is valued and recognized, thereby building an employee-friendly workplace.

1.Tell us more about your company and your journey.

My early days were spent in New Delhi. I was known in the family to be hardworking and was always burning the midnight oil to do better in academics. My Tamil speaking Brahmin family could never have imagined me blossoming into an entrepreneur ever. In the twelfth standard, I decided to major in Arts and when nobody was expecting anything from me; I stumped everyone- family, teachers at school by doing exceptionally well in my board exams. I stood first and my name is etched in the achievers' board even today! I got entrance into Miranda house due to my good performance in school and I was exposed to the elitist crowd of Delhi University overnight. I struggled to adjust myself well to the changing environment and my personality started to take shape only then.

I was a drifter for the most part and dabbled in various jobs such as selling credit cards to individuals, working with Child relief and you for a brief time before I meandered into the public relations world. This happened by chance when I happened to meet one of my neighbours in Bangalore in a busy market. She was running a PR agency and offered me a job which I instantly took since I was looking for one then. Since then there has been no looking back. I moved from one PR agency to the other climbing the corporate ladder which helped me understand the nuts and bolts of the business well. It also exposed me to the elements that needed improvement to satisfy the end customer. The typical corporate job and the climb did not satisfy the person in me because there was lobbyism, favouritism and despite all the work that you put in, there was always something that you were lacking in your supervisor’s eyes. I thought I was squandering away my potential and decided to take the plunge one fine day to start working as a freelancer. I was familiar with the business and clients kept adding up and I thought it is time that I take this to the next level.

2.How did you rise to the highest echelons in your company?

After working with several agencies and organizations, I noticed that I was not happy about the work I am involved in. Considering the experience that I had, PR seemed like the best option for me to focus on. I decided to move on as a PR freelancer, and as a natural step, I started a PR agency.

3.What does your typical day look like?

My typical day starts during the morning when the entire team track newspapers and client news.

Post that we have team meetings to discuss our work strategy and client meetings that happens mostly during 1st week of every month. In the evening post 630, I have some network meetings which is most critical to build a business.

4. How do you see the company changing in 5 to 10 years, and how do you see yourself creating that change?

My aim to make Clarity PR one of the top PR agencies that would focus on creating value for the company. In the next 5 to 10 years, I aim to become not only the national player but an International brand. I also plan to integrate Technology in PR.

I would like to train the young ones to become a PR Professional which I have started doing it. . I would like to groom more young girls into the PR profession.

5. What has been your biggest challenge that you faced and how did you overcome that?

Challenges are part of your life. So when you are starting up, there are financial, business and hiring challenges. But most of the times, I focused on taking the next step and work on improving the situation.

6. What are some of the most important factors for running a successful business?

The most important is that it’s a long process and one needs to keep one's vision on building business. There are times when one is demotivated with people or clients, but keep your vision and aim for it.

7. What are your tips for first time and aspiring entrepreneurs?

I have observed that a lot of aspiring entrepreneur think the business is going to thrive instantly, but remember that one needs to understand that just like a plant, you will reap benefits after some years. Initially, one needs to build the foundation.

8. How can one overcome a hurdle of lack of funds when starting up?

I think in every journey, some important people help you financially be it family, friends or acquaintances who believe in your belief.
