Artificial Intelligence: How It Is Impacting Us Now and in Future

Technology around us

In the first half of the 20th century, science fiction introduced the world with the thought of artificially intelligent robots. The story of the robots began with the 'heartless' Tinman from the Wizard of Oz and proceeded with the humanoid robot that portrayed Maria in Metropolis.

By the 1950s, we had a group of scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers coming with the concept of artificial intelligence (or AI) culturally assimilated in their minds.

Then came, Alan Turing, a young British polymath who analyzed the mathematical feasibility of artificial intelligence. Turing proposed that humans use available information for solving problems and making decisions. So why can’t machines do the same thing as us?

This question was the logical framework of his 1950 paper, Computing Machinery and Intelligence, in which he discussed how to develop intelligent machines and how to test their intelligence.

We now live in the age of 'huge data'. It is an age where we can collect huge sums of information too cumbersome for a person to process. The utilization of artificial intelligence in this regard has been quite fruitful in several industries such as technology, banking, marketing, and entertainment.

So what is in store for the future?

In the immediate future, AI language looks like the next big step for us. It is already underway.  In the long term, the goal to be achieved is general intelligence, which is a machine that would surpass human cognitive abilities in all tasks.

This is along the lines of the conscious robot we are used to seeing in various sci-fi movies. I am sure that this would be accomplished in the next 50 years.

These days, AI seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue. While many of us are aware of this major trend in tech development, I’ve noticed AI appearing more and more like one of the most in-demand areas of expertise for job seekers in this generation.

I’m sure that for many of us, including me, the term “AI” rises the sci-fi fantasies or the fear of robots taking over the world, thanks to the authors and media.

The depictions of AI in the media have run to an extent, and while no one can predict how it will evolve in the future, the current trends and developments amuse us by painting a much different picture of how AI will become part of our everyday lives.

In reality, AI is already at work all around us, impacting everything from our search results to the way we shop.

Artificial Intelligence:

To understand artificial intelligence aka AI, you need to understand what intelligence means. You might think it means being smart. But intelligence is much more different than doing well on tests.

Intelligence is something very complicated. Scientists who do a study on intelligence still have many unanswered questions. They don't agree on what intelligence means.

They can’t agree on the meaning of artificial intelligence either. Regarding this issue, some education organizations have created their definitions.

AI4All (AI for all) describes AI as a different branch of computer science that allows computers to make predictions and decisions for rectifying problems.

Artificial intelligence is of two types namely,

General AI

The goal of artificial general intelligence, or general AI, is made to be equal to a human, our intelligence. General AI is what you regularly see in books and movies that take place in a dystopian future.

Scientists try to understand human intelligence so they can help develop the general AI. They use digital models to copy human behaviours. They try to understand things like how we learn or how creativity works in our life.

Recently, scientists who study the human brain and scientists who study AI have made progress by getting ideas from each other. But the thing is, the experts don’t think it will exist any time soon.

Weak AI

Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) is the AI which we can experience right now in our life. Sometimes this is also called weak AI. This type of AI machine can take up actions and make decisions automatically in certain situations. Auto-driven cars, virtual assistants and personalized audio and video recommendations are some of the examples of narrow AI.

Pros & Cons of A.I

As all things have positive and negative effects, so does Artificial Intelligence. Some of them are listed below

Advantages

1. Good at analytical jobs

2. Reduced time for data wearisome tasks

3. Delivers consistent results

4. AI-powered virtual agents are always available.

Disadvantages

1. It is Exorbitant

2. Requires deep technical proficiency

3. A limited supply of qualified workers to build AI tools

4. Only knows what it's been shown

5. Lack of ability to generalize from one task to another

Is AI needed in human society?

You can ask me this question but I would say it depends. If you opt for a faster and effective way to complete your work by working constantly without taking a break, then yes, it is.

However, if humankind is satisfied with a natural way of living without unnecessary desires to conquer the order of nature, then it is not. History tells us that we are always looking for something faster, easier, more effective, to finish the task, which we work on.

Therefore, the pressure for further development urges humankind to look for a new and better way of doing our things.

AI has a strong impact on certain sectors, but in particular:

AI has been a part of our life, monitoring our acts and preferences but most of the fields are using this technology to improve our lives and a few are mentioned below.

1. Medical:

The benefits of utilizing AI in the medical field are already being explored and are put to use. The medical industry has a vast amount of data, which can be utilized to create predictive models related to healthcare. It is said that it will be a huge demand in future

2. Automotive:

You’re already witnessing how AI is impacting the world of transportation and automobiles with autonomous automobiles and autonomous navigation. AI is said to have a major impact on manufacturing, including the automotive sector.

3. Cybersecurity:

Cybersecurity is on the mind of many business leaders, especially considering the spike in cybersecurity breaches throughout 2020 and the interest of students in learning them. AI and machine learning will always be critical tools for identifying and predicting threats in cybersecurity.

These are the main sectors that will be very advantageous if AI is put to use. There are many others too but these sectors will improve the condition of the society.

AI will also be considered as a crucial asset for security in the world of finance, given that it can process large amounts of data to predict and catch instances of fraud, it’ll be useful for us in upcoming years.

Acquiring AI Knowledge:

AI is at the top of many lists of the most important skills in today's job market. Jobs are requesting AI or machine-learning skills since they are the future and are expected to increase by 71% in the next five years.

If you’d like to expand your knowledge in this arena, consider some of the great free online course offerings that focus on AI skills.

The field of AI is especially important for young people as they are the next generation. Its impact on their lives will only increase every day. But becoming more familiar with AI does not mean taking computer science classes. You can always learn about AI in many different methods.

A.I is machine intelligence and a machine can do any task unanimously and continuously without any mistake. Artificial Intelligence is often used as a substitute for human judgment as it minimizes their amount of time and energy.

Although A. I has its Pros and cons, society is rapidly accepting and emerging into its new technology-based trends, which put their footprints on every sphere of society.
