There are multiple health benefits of owning a pet. Usually, a pet will follow a very routine and disciplined life which will force his owner to become a creature of habit like his furry friend who gets up early in the morning and has to go for a good walk. Pets can give you reasons for getting outside into the fresh air more often.
When you are a parent to an adorable pet
who uses his very own language to communicate with you, you have to be more
caring and attentive towards him.
This way, you get to exercise more when your
pet needs to go for a walk, have frequent belly laughs when you play with your
little friend, and the best part is having someone waiting for you at the door
every time you return from work.
Playing and going on a walk with your pet
regularly helps decrease blood pressure, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels.
The best thing that a pet offers you besides these is companionship.
How lucky
it must be to have a little creature who never gets bored of you and has all
the time in this world to sit by your side and to cuddle you. Pets are
considered great for keeping loneliness and depression at a distance.
For these wonderful benefits, there is at
least one pet in every household in the United States. Studies show that having
a pet affects you mentally as well.
The growing bond between people and their
pets are proved to be helpful in decreasing stress levels and filling the lives
of their owners with happiness and cuddles. Also, a pet gives its owners
increased opportunities for socialization.
However, even pet owners need to be aware
of both sides of the coin. Even though pets give numerous health benefits to
their owners, they can sometimes make people sick by carrying harmful germs.
Pets might appear healthy and still make people around them sick because of the
germs that they are carrying.
'Zoonotic' is the term given to diseases
that people get from animals. Below are a few tips to help people prevent these
diseases and stay healthy while enjoying life with their pets.
Choosing
the Right Pet
Before adopting a pet. you need to be very
sure if they are the right type for you and your family. You need to do some
research before adopting a pet and must be well aware with all of their needs.
Before choosing which new friend to bring home, you need to ask yourself these
questions:
- What is the life span of this
animal?
- What kind of food does the pet
eat?
- What will be the exercise
routine of this pet?
- How large will it become as it
grows?
- How much money will be spent on
the veterinary care?
- Will I be having enough time to
look after and clean up after bringing home the pet?
- What kind of habitat will be
needed by this pet to live a healthy life?
- Are pets allowed at or around
the place I live?
- Are there any young children,
aged people, or people with compromised immunity who will be looking after or
staying around the pet?
Children who are younger than 5 years, aged
people above 65, and ones with a compromised immunity are more vulnerable and
likely to get diseases that spread between pets and people (Zoonotic
diseases).
Also, pregnant women are at an increased risk of getting Zoonotic diseases. However, such
diseases can be avoided by developing some easy habits.
How
to Stay Healthy Around Pets?
After feeding, cuddling with, or cleaning
up after your animal friend, it is very important to wash your hands properly
in order to avoid catching any diseases that you might get from the germs that
your pet is carrying.
If you or someone from your family is unwell and
concerned about such illnesses, consulting a doctor and mentioning your recent
contact with animals will be the thing to do.
Irrespective of what pet you are having,
you need to provide a proper veterinary care for keeping your pet and family
members healthy. Visiting a veterinary clinic regularly is very important.
Also, your pet will need a healthy diet, clean water, clean bedding, and an
exercising routine. Getting your pet vaccinated is pivotal besides the need for
deworming, and flea and tick control.
Besides regular hand washing, you need to
maintain a good pet hygiene. Pets and their supplies should be kept out of the
kitchen and pet's feces should be removed from yard and other places using a
bag which should then be disposed off carefully in proper areas.
Children
should be taught about the habit of hand washing and hygiene so as to be
carefree when around pets who teach children compassion and responsibility.
