Dr. Kapila Verma - Own Your Life, No Matter What Obstacles Stop You (Consultant Dermatologist & Aesthetic Surgeon From India)

Dr. Kapila Verma

Digital Health is a double-edged sword. Definitely, it has brought down the gap between healthcare providers & seekers, even amidst lockdown. But at the same time, correct information both as diagnosis & treatment sometimes is missed or even wrongly understood by the patient. Also, misuse of doctors' prescriptions has to be checked.

1. Tell us about your upbringing, background, and journey? Why did you choose to be a dermatologist?

Hi Beautiful People, I m Dr. Kapila Verma (@drkapilaverma).
Consultant Dermatologist & Aesthetic Surgeon at Skin Selection by Dr. Kapila Verma, Kolar Road, Bhopal ( @skinselectionbhopal ) - it’s a Wholistic Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre.

I was born & raised in Bhopal till my 10+2, following which I persuaded my MBBS & MD i.e Masters in Dermatology from outstations. It was during my MBBS, specifically while doing an internship, I knew I wanted a Surgical branch as my career. My loved ones’ blessings & my hard work paid off - fantastic rank in NEET PG Exam made my dream come true.

This became a turning point in my life, after many ups & downs, numerous sleepless nights, hundreds of sacrifices - I passed my MD Dermatology with a Gold Medal & Best Post-graduate Awards. After gaining experience & expertise, I started with my own clinic with the support of my whole family ( especially, my Husband). Our whole team at Skin Selection works to bring the Best Skincare & Haircare with all the latest technologies & treatment options available to our patients.

Being the daughter of a Forest Officer & an awesome Home-maker, my passion & love for Nature, Wildlife, Woods has always grown with time. Art & Craft, Dance, Discipline, Fitness & Wellness are my mother’s gifts to me. My younger brother, my sister-in-law & all my cousins have always encouraged me to perform better.

My vision is to bring - Wholistic Dermatology to Bhopal. This will be overall wellness from inside-out, & not just the cosmetic procedures/products.
My goal is to provide approachable & affordable skin health to all - for this, I am doing  Health & Dermatology talks. And also providing consultation over Digital platforms to people in distant & peripheral areas.

My motto is skincareisprime

2. What is the most challenging aspect of Laser surgery?

Challenges faced

Doing procedures/surgeries has been my interest from starting. I never felt any difficulty in learning the various techniques of Laser surgery. Precision is my strength & have always delivered my best to my patients. As a woman in medicine, combating gender bias right from medical school to up to running a private practice has been a major task. Lifestyle & career choices for seeking a balance between family & work is a big task for women. But "determination & perseverance" can beat any odd.

3. We salute your work during the pandemic, where did you get the inspiration to work so hard?

As medical professionals, we are always trained to give our 100%, especially at difficult times. Working during a pandemic has brought more satisfaction to me than ever. This has been a tough time, but kudos to all medical professionals to help fight the situation.

4. What are your concerns about Digital Health?

Digital Health is a double-edged sword. Definitely, it has brought down the gap between healthcare providers & seekers, even amidst lockdown. But at the same time, correct information both as diagnosis & treatment sometimes is missed or even wrongly understood by the patient. Also, misuse of doctors' prescriptions has to be checked.

5. What is your message for those wanting to build a career in this field and the young generation?

Advice to all Young Aspirants

Own your life, no matter what obstacles stop you. The best way of doing this is by looking at yourself the way your parents & loved ones wanted you to become... This never fails. Taking care of yourself - physically & emotionally is important.

6. What does your typical day look like and what do you like to do besides work?

A typical day in my life starts with my family & self-time which includes reading & writing papers related to my work, followed by a visit to a hospital where I attend Dermatology OPD & admitted patients. I prefer taking my lunch at home. This is followed by attending procedures & surgeries planned for the day, which is mostly completed by late afternoon.

After that, I prefer to take a break, enjoy a relaxing sunset with a coffee. Evening consultations are taken for 1-2 hours, with this my work life ends. I prefer making dinner for family & enjoying this meal with them. I enjoy holidays with friends & prefer to travel. Photography & craft are few other passions. I really enjoy dancing & never miss a chance to dance.
