Zanx - Dance Is So Much More Than Just Moving Your Body and One Should Know About it In and Out (Pioneer of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance in India)

I'm practicing belly dance for 13 years and tribal fusion belly dance for 10 years and teaching the same for 9 years. I hold the title of 'Most Hypnotic Belly Dancer of the year 2015'.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I am from Delhi, India and I am a tribal fusion belly dance artist. I hold a master's degree in fashion Management from NIFT. I have been dancing since the age of 3 and Belly dancing since 2008 when I saw Shakira dancing to her song 'Hips Don't Lie.

After practicing Belly dance for two years, I fell in love with tribal fusion belly dance immensely which is a subgenre of Belly dance, and learned this art form from various national and international artists.

I have been teaching and practicing belly dance and tribal fusion belly dance for 9 years. I hold the title of 'most hypnotic belly dancer of the year 2015'.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue dancing and how did you start?

In the starting period of my graduation years after watching Shakira's few songs, I always tried to do the same movements and I could do them with ease. When my graduation was about to end, I took formal training in the beginner level of belly dance.

I wasn't allowed to dance at home so I always practiced watching my shadow covertly. After completing my Master's education, I started my career as a belly dance instructor.

3. Who is your favourite dancer and why?

My favourite dancer is Zoe Jakes. She is a great inspiration for pursuing tribal fusion belly dance.

Her movements are soft and strong, at the same time. The impact she leaves after her performance and the Aura she creates while performing is speechless.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a dancer?

As a dancer one can teach in studios and online via applications like zoom and google meet. One can perform in corporate events, compete and perform in belly dance festivals or other dance festivals and other dance competitions.

If one has a good following on social media, brand collaboration is also a good option. One can start their own dance academy too or be a brand of their own.

5. Is format training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

It depends. If formal training is available to you, such as for Indian classical dance forms or any other dance forms and you can afford it, then opt for it. But if your dance form is new and not much formal training is available to you, such as my dance form that is for tribal fusion belly dance then try and do it on the basis of talent and with time keep learning whenever it is available and affordable to you.

Because dance is so much more than just moving your body and one should know about it in and out if they want to take it professionally.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

It's a very competitive and risky world out there, if you really want to pursue this as a career it would be better if one gets into this after completing their studies.

It demands regular practice. If one can do it daily then it's amazing. But if you can't then try to do it at least twice or thrice in a week.

Keep practising but remember it's not just about the dance it's also about the costume and the music you choose to dance on. Work on them too.

Find your USP that resides in you, from the very beginning and that nobody could teach you. (that is your own style). Keep yourself motivated and don't lose hope. Be patient.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book is The Harry Potter series. They are not just books, they are emotions. They always give me positive feelings and always boost me whenever I feel low.
