Laveena Kalra - I Started off With Bharatanatyam Dance Classes at the Age of 4 and Simultaneously Started Learning Western Dance Forms (Dancer from India)

I started off with Bharatanatyam dance classes at the age of 4 and simultaneously started learning western dance forms. I completed my course of Bharatanatyam with distinctions in all my exams.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I think I started dancing in my mom’s tummy. My mom was very passionate about dancing,  she wanted to do something more in this field but couldn't. And hence as soon as I started walking she put me into a dance class.

I started off with Bharatanatyam dance classes at the age of 4 and simultaneously started learning western dance forms. I completed my course of Bharatanatyam with distinctions in all my exams. I was learning western dance styles at Shiamak Davar’s Institute of Performing Arts.

I learnt under him until I graduated in Dance in the year 2014. I was then a part of his company as an instructor till 2018, followed by which I became an entrepreneur and started my own Dance Company – LADC which holds a mission to “Spread Happiness through DANCE".

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue dancing and how did you start?

Since I started dancing at a very early age, my passion for it grew as I kept learning, training and I  never wanted to stop. Ever since my school days, I have wanted to pursue dance as my career.

After completing 10th std I got a chance to train in dance for 365 days non-stop for 12 hours each day under Shiamak himself. As soon as I finished one year of training, there was no looking back there on and my dance career began.

3. Who is your favourite dancer and why?

To be honest, I don’t have anyone specific. There are so many dancers/ artists who are so good and an inspiration to many.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a dancer?

A dancer is a performer and hence one can perform at various events like stage shows, sangeets, music videos, award functions etc. Content creation is another new addition to a dancer’s plate.

However, there are plenty of opportunities in the field of DANCE. In the field of dance, one can teach, choreograph and perform which widens the growth opportunities for a person.

5. Is format training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

If you ask me, I believe formal training is a must. One needs to train themselves to make the foundation strong. Having the talent is great, but nurturing the talent is ideal. If you are talented but your foundation is not strong you won’t be able to survive the race.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

Train yourself, learn from good teachers. Take a good amount of time in building your foundation strong and be humble.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

To be honest, I ain’t an avid reader. So answering this would be difficult.
