Movie Review: ‘The Courier’ (2020) - A Fair First-Class Espionage Film

Source - Youtube

A Benedict Cumberbatch war drama espousing comradeship has everything that most war films have forgotten to be - made artfully.

Introduction

Movie’s Name - The Courier

Directed by -  Dominic Cooke

Genre - War, Action, Thriller, Adventure

Runtime - 111 min

Language - English

Synopsis

Where the Cold War is at its peak in the 1960s and the world is divided between superpowers, spy Greville Wyne and his Russian source try to put an end to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The film follows the real-life events of Greville Wyne, a British salesman who becomes a key player in the ongoing war stakes at the zenith.

Wyne’s real-life turns into a mess when he is enlisted as an intermediary between M16 and a Soviet officer named Oleg Penkovsky.

About the Director

Dominic Cooke is an English director and writer born in 1966, London. In his career, he was appointed as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2014 and won the International Theatre Institute Award for Excellence in International Theatre in 2013; the same year he was also awarded Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Warwick University.

About the Movie

The movie premiered in January 2020 under its original title ‘Ironbark’ at the Sundance Film Festival. It was theatrically released in various countries only in the year 2021 and received favorable reviews from critics and its viewers.

The movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch, famous for his roles in the Sherlock series and as ‘Doctor Strange’ in the Marvel Studios films; Merab Ninidze, Rachel Brosnahan, Jessie Buckley, Angus Wright, etc.

Theme Involved

The dressing of the story stubbornly lacked the quality of tension while it built upon the character of a tradesman but its definite center around a selfless duty to save their respective nations with high quality of gravitas and direction remains as the most eye-catching and probably only respect earning moment as the portrayal of genuine friendship develops between Greville and Oleg.

In addition, sharing responsibilities at the brink of possible annihilation yet they come to a consensus that love trumps hatred and there may always be a way out of this. Their mutual compassion peaks late but is no less moving.

Their scenes of struggle to make a restful choice battling between the love for country and family paints a huge complexity of emotions and taps right on the emotions bringing a heartfelt subplot.

Terrifying Scenes from the Movie

1. Unknowingly on the verge of being caught - Just when Wyne is relaxed and sitting in the plane to go back home, he still has the tense look on his face when the instinct kicks in that something unexpectedly bad is going to happen to him.

2. Nevertheless, it’s a win-win - Though Wyne and Oleg have been exposed their plan remains intact of saving their nations from annihilation at the cost of Wyne being imprisoned for a year and more and Oleg, unfortunately, being killed as the ‘traitor’ of his nation.

My Critical Response

Although the movie had received a good rating of 87% many critics and viewers expressed how the same level of intrigue could be held through the very end of the film. While the film started off well and adequately displayed ambitious appeal to the audiences but fails to keep you awake as it resists involving or affecting by capturing oppressive lives and insufficient focus to the details of the espionage.

The scriptwriters wanting to keep the intimacy and intense atmosphere throughout may be why it both wins and loses. Its abrupt ending is also where the film loses many points with a huge blow on its delivery of an effective old-school spy adventure though the performances by both men were spectacular.

Furthermore, trying to elevate the quality by providing a thrilling fact-based story genuinely did justice on the hook, that is, an underlying history that deserves to be shared.

The Bottom Line

The Courier isn’t quite the breath-taking labyrinth but if you are looking for some old-fashioned spy movies then this movie is a heads up.

My ratings for the movie - 3.5 on 5

You may watch the movie on - Prime Video/Fmovies
