1.Tell us more about your background and journey.
I started learning hindustani classical music at the age of 3 and my journey has been going well since then. Thankfully I've had the opportunity of learning from various gurus which helped me diversify my music. Hence I developed a taste in different genres of music such as classical, semi-classical, folk, sufi, etc. 2013 marked the beginning of my professional journey when I did Voice of Punjab season 4. Then in 2016 , I ended up becoming the finalist of Voice of Punjab season 6.
I released some independent music in the Punjabi industry such as Chiku Chiku, Bas Teri Aan, Shah Kala. 2019 marked a major milestone in my career when The Voice India happened where I was the second runner-up in the show. Post that multiple projects started happening such as Hawa Banke with Darshan Raval, Guzar Jayega with the legendary Amitabh bacchan ji, Zaroorat with Shatrughan Sinha, Sonakshi Sinha my independent single Meherbaniyan and Bewafa.
2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?
Music has been a God gift to me and I am blessed enough to have beautiful parents who were able to identify the gift that I was bestowed with. I've always had a very keen ear and which is why at a very early stage I decided that I wanted to sing for films and my parents thankfully were very supportive of it. My father used to travel with me to places just so that I could seek good training in music.
3. Who is your favourite artist and why?
Ahh tough question! I have a soul connection with Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sahab that is definitely not limited to this lifetime. But when I look at an artist who is a complete package, the only person I am super fond of is Gurdas Maan Sahab. Why? You see how different age groups, different people coming from different sects of the society enjoy his music so much and that is something I want for myself too.
4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?
I believe with the exposure of social media that we have now, the opportunities for a musician have shot up. Instagram being the first. I see so many musicians doing really well in their career just on the basis of social media presence. Also the TV reality shows play a very important role because they give an artist an immediate access to all the television screens. Hence the opportunities are multiple. Depends how you treat them or how you grab them.
5. Is format training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?
One thing that the new generation is missing out on is for my training. I keep talking about this often. It is so important to seek training from a well trained coach. One might work on his/her skills and try becoming good at it but when you have a mentor in your life , they become your guiding light. So if you want to be remembered for your work or if you want to be called an artist of all seasons, make sure you go through proper training.
