The curse of illiteracy has been a really big concern in the world, stunting the growth of economies worldwide. Illiteracy counts as a state of being where one cannot read or write.
It can also be defined as insufficient knowledge or lack of education. Although illiteracy can have many meanings, pertaining to a certain topic or a subject, or in general. Someone may know how to read and write but not know how to use a computer, etc.
Illiteracy does not occur due to gender, age, race, geographical locations or cultures. There are many reasons which could be the cause of this curse which is spreading quickly amongst the generations and those yet to come.
Causes of illiteracy
Although there can be several reasons which can affect the illiteracy of a child, most of them include ‘illiteracy amongst parents’, ‘Lack of family support’, ‘lack of awareness and ‘social barriers’.
Parents who are uneducated themselves would not push their kids to become literate as much as a parent who is literate would. The emphasis that isn’t put on getting a proper education is the key reason because, without it, the kid never understands the importance of education.
Lack of family support can come in the cases where the child might have personal difficulty reading or writing such as dyslexia.
If the family does not understand or cannot grasp the idea of such a problem, they will burden the kid with unrealistic expectations. This can cause a huge amount of pressure on the child.
There might be, and must be, some places where the majority of the local population do not understand the importance of getting an education. In situations like these, the illiteracy rates might be high. A disinterest in getting an education might lead to an increase in the illiteracy rate.
How can students help?
Students are the future of our world. The kids in schools right now, are the upcoming scientists and doctors and engineers that will run the world one day.
To show them the importance of getting an education would be getting them used to the idea that getting an education to its completion is very important and cannot be replaced.
Other ways to reduce illiteracy could be to create workshops in areas with less literacy and give free educational lessons to the kids who are unable to attend school because of their personal reasons.
Vocational training and studies can also help in cutting down the illiteracy rate of any country as if the students are majoring in one segment of studies, they can learn more in-depth about that one topic and end up getting a job in a similar field.
We often forget that where the students of today are, we were too. Eager to grow up and eager to tackle the world of our own volition. But we need to also remember that these kids do not know about the world as much as we do now.
And we need to teach them how they can help the world which eventually they have to live in and run for their livelihood.
If we can get the students of today interested in believing the importance of studies, then we can also have enough faith in them that they can in turn run this world, maybe even better than us.
Illiteracy is a very big problem and it is not new. It has been around for several centuries. Illiteracy is stopping us from reaching our full potential as a society. This increasing rate of illiteracy is stunting our growth as a whole. And it needs to be combatted as soon as possible.
The major part of the causes of illiteracy includes familial or societal factors. These need to be eradicated for the kids and the younger generation to experience growth in their own way, to learn as much as they want and with the freedom of choosing what they want to learn.
In the end, it is up to the students of today to handle these situations as they are the future of our world. They are the ones who can deal with this in their own way and can help remove illiteracy from the world once and for all.
