An Overview

Since you are here, you either love poetry and want to add a new poetic masterpiece to your shelf, or you are not a big fan of poetry and want to know what is the big deal about Milk and Honey, right?

Many people who criticized the book said, not literally, it is just an Instagram-like cringe set of posts. Milk and Honey are presented following a very non-complex smooth approach, but this is the good thing about it anyways.

Just think to yourself, isn’t it nice to escape your busy tiresome day through reading a simple artistic piece of work that would empower you to carry on, instead of spending the only fun time you have in your day trying to decipher the hidden meanings in a difficult kind of reading.

About the author

Rupi Kaur is an Indian writer and poet, who emigrated to Canada at a very young age and got Canadian nationality. Milk and Honey is the first poetry collection that Rupi had written and published in 2014 when she was still studying at university. The Sun and Her Flowers would be her second published poetry collection and it was pretty much the twin book of Milk and Honey

It is important to highlight the fact that Rupi's poetry collections were so successful that around 10 million copies were sold. Both collections were equally reproduced in more than 42 languages. This brilliant artist often centralizes her writings on sensitive parts of human life including depression, love, pain, loss, and others.

About the book

Milk and Honey is Rupi Kaur's first published artistic creation that came in a creative form in which Rupi has combined both free poetry and prose. The book focused on how one could survive the bitterness of life. It talked about several prominent and touching experiences that comprised both the negative and the positive aspects of life.

The book dealt with how one could experience violence, emotional and physical abuse, as well as love and healing from the traumas. Milk and Honey were divided into four chapters that would be shortly reviewed below.

Though the heartbreak and the harshness of life are emphasized in this book, Milk and Honey is equipped with this magical touch that would just make you forget about the pain and enjoy the good things because good things are always there, we just need to look deeply and see them.

Major Themes

As mentioned earlier, Milk and Honey comprised four chapters that tackled four interesting themes:

The Hurting: this chapter is so sensitive and would leave some lasting effects on readers. It focuses on sexual abuse and traumatic experiences. Rupi also spoke about the nature of the bond she had with her parents. The writer also included many of her childhood memories that would give readers a glimpse of what she had witnessed in her life.

The Loving: Rupi, here, went on describing her very first love relationship. The chapter is pretty much sweet and you can sense the happiness the writer is feeling during her telling of how falling in love makes a person feel. I should shed light on the fact that the chapter contains many sexual moments described.

The Breaking: Chapter three may give you a first impression that it would be the most depressing one, when in fact, it has some hope striking elements and sincere feelings within it. It describes Rupi’s situation both during and after her sad breakup.

The Healing: the last chapter of Milk and Honey is the most positive and feelings-driven section in the whole book. It is at this point that the writer eventually finds her inner peace and almost heals from the traumas or at least learns how to move on with her life. All this is conveyed to the readers and would probably inspire them to do the same.

Famous Quotes

“Loneliness is a sign you are in desperate need of yourself.”

“I am a museum full of art

but you had your eyes shut”

“If you were born with the weakness to fall you were born with the strength to rise”

“How you love yourself is

how you teach others

to love you”

“You tell me to quiet down cause my opinions make me less beautiful but I was not made with a fire in my belly so I could be put out I was not made with a lightness on my tongue so I could be easy to swallow I was made heavy half blade and half silk difficult to forget and not easy for the mind to follow”

The Bottom Line

Milk and Honey are not for everyone, since the style is a bit special. However, if you have experienced at least one of the experiences emphasized in the book, be it positive or negative, you will deeply relate to it.

The best thing about this book is that it is offered from one woman who went through a great deal of pain and other feelings to a woman that either went through the same situations and can empathize with Rupi and with herself or did not experience any of this but will learn from them and equip herself with the right weapons to protect her from the harshness of life.

My ratings for the book: 4 on 5
