Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has been a cult classic for 23 years, and the Karan Johar film is still a fan favourite. When you sit down to view the movie as a millennial, though, you will undoubtedly find a slew of issues. In certain scenes, it's overtly sexist, while in others, it's downright nasty. Everything that was wrong with it is listed below.
1. Only 'girly' girls should be loved by men
So, while Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol) are closest friends, he is primarily interested in Tina (Rani Mukerji), who has returned from the United States. You might wonder what's wrong with Anjali. She's 'tomboyish,' plays basketball, and isn't particularly 'attractive.' After all, who cares if you're a good person?
2. Sanskars are solely religious
But wait, Tina isn't immediately regarded as the ideal girl. While on public exhibition, she must demonstrate her sanskaras by saying Om Jai Jagdish Hare. Pahlaj Nihalani, on the other hand, would have been ecstatic with that scene.
3. Miss Braganza and Principal Malhotra's hypocrisy
We didn't say all males are the same, did we? KKHH was the one who did it. Principal Malhotra (Anupam Kher) is seen scolding girls for wearing short skirts since they irritate men. When Miss Braganza (Archana Puran Singh), a teacher at the same college, wears a similar look, he seems to adore it. Shouldn't the Principal have instructed the lads not to look instead of scolding the girls? That's the second strike.
4. The weird ‘Neelam show’
Is it just us, or did everyone else notice how a random guy abandoned his girlfriend on national television because he met someone else? Neelam Kothari, who played a VJ in the movie, should have hit the guy right there and then. But, well, why not encourage cheating? Thank you, KJo... but no! You've simply encouraged a generation of males to do the same thing and believe it's fine.
5. Breach of confidential information
We already know Principal Malhotra is a little perplexed. However, leaking a student's personal information is a clear breach of contract, especially if Rahul is trying to prevent Anjali from marrying. Even the dorm warden, Riffat Bi (Himani Shivpuri), was on board. For God's sake, Rahul could be a psychopath serial killer. Put an end to it!
6. Rahul was an irresponsible father
Rahul was a single father, which has its own set of challenges. But he abandoned his daughter for two hours on a random bridge! Everyone in the audience cringed at this verbal exchange. Please, Rahul, don't be creepy.
7. Rahul making fun of his best friend
Even though Rahul is Anjali's best friend, he is the first to make fun of her with his girlfriend. Anjali was merely a naive young lady attempting to impress her crush. And, to be honest, she was the one character in the film with whom we could all identify, and she was viciously mocked by her own closest friend and his fiancée. These two do a pretty good job of chasing her out of college instead of providing her advice on how to dress and apply her make-up better.
8. Rahul loves girly Anjali only
Anjali Becomes Attractive After Completely Transforming Herself
Anjali had always been a wonderful best friend, but Rahul refused to pay attention to her until she wore a saree. Why does a woman have to alter her appearance to attract male attention? And, of course, the background music changed when he saw her in a saree. She was now deserving of his devotion!
9. A Teacher Was Whistled At By Rahul
Remember how, immediately before the Pyar Dosti Hai sequence, Rahul whistled at Ms Briganza? What made you think that was acceptable? Stop being sleazy. Catcalling is sexual harassment. I wish Rahul had been called out in the first scene because he wouldn't have gotten it far enough in the basketball scene to take out Anjali's saree.
10. Anjali chooses Rahul over Aman
It took approximately a decade for Rahul to realise that Anjali was the appropriate woman for him. You didn't have to re-enter the picture and sabotage a good thing. Anjali was planning to marry Aman, a nice guy (Salman).
Isn't it what all of us girls desire now? Someone who never condemned her for the way she looked or conducted her life? Rahul arrives at Anjali's wedding using his manly force, but praising the Lord, Aman realises that he can do so much better and hands over his bride to the player. And everything is OK.
