BLACKPINK - The Greatest Female Band on the Planet

BLACKPINK – the K-pop Girl Group is currently the no.1 female band on the planet. The members of the group include Jisoo, (26), Jennie, (25), Rose, (24) and Lisa, (24).  They debuted in the K-pop industry on August 8, 2016. The band also became the most subscribed artist on YouTube on September 10, 2021, previously this record was held by Justin Bieber. They were the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella and also the first to reach 1 billion views on YouTube.

The popularity of the band can be seen in their song records on YouTube. Music videos and even dance practice videos have got a billion views to count. The members of the group have got their individual fan bases with Lisa having 78 million followers and being the most followed K-pop idol on Instagram, Jennie being the second in line with her 67 million fans, and Jisoo acquiring the third position with 60 million followers and Rose, with her 59 million followers the fourth most followed K-pop idol.

Their popularity can be seen in the fact they all are the faces of the world’s most expensive and luxurious brands. Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo and Rose are the global brand ambassadors of the brands Celine, Chanel, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent respectively. The members also represent brands like Bulgari, M.A.C. Cosmetics, Calvin Klein, Hera, Cartier and Tiffany and Co etc. 

They have graced the covers of various magazines like ELLE, Rolling Stones, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, W, Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire. They have attended various runaway and fashion events of the famous brands, bringing with them a huge number of fans. Belonging to South Korea, their fans belong to multiple nations and are not only restricted to Korea. They have been able to do so with just a couple of dozen songs. 

Speciality:

The band belongs to the company YG Entertainment which previously held famous groups like BIG BANG, 2NE1 and PSY, the singer of Gangnam Style. After a gap of seven years, YG was ready to debut the group in 2016 and the members had huge shoes to fill in. They debuted with two songs, Boombayah, with its catchy chorus and Whistle, with its funky beat, which became instant hits and earned them a reputation. The music videos of these two songs now have 1 billion songs. 

Their songs Playing with Fire, a fiery track, an acoustic version of Whistle a previous hit and Stay, a rather different song (from their previous concepts of girl crush) were included in the Square Two when they returned for the second time in November 2016. The group during its initial days dubbed as “the new 2NEI” have now proved that they can set the stage on fire with their presence. 

Their song Ddu-du-ddu-du brought them upfront to K-pop. The m/v has around 1.8 billion views on YouTube and is the third most-streamed song of the group on Spotify with 496 million streams.  It became a huge hit due to club-dancing beats produced by the in-house producer and the man behind some of the greatest hits given by the artists of YG entertainment, Teddy Park. This particular song made Blackpink known to a larger international audience, and they have not looked back since then. 

Kill this Love, their fourth album containing the song of the same name broke Guinness World Records. The song has now got 588 million streams (second highest of the group) on Spotify. After its release, the group performed at Coachella and to date their present-day performances are compared to Coachella performances because they could not have been better. Blackpink got the opportunity to reach a vast number of people and they stole their hearts with their powerful presence. 

They made a comeback with The Album in October 2020 and their pre-release single How You Like That became the most viewed video on YouTube in the first 24 hours (but now they don’t hold that record). The Album was one of the most pre-ordered albums of K-pop. Their album featured a hit single, Ice Cream with Selena Gomez and Bet You Wanna with Cardi B. 

The group's success could also be attributed to the different personalities of each member. Each individual brings a variety of things to the table. Lisa with her sassy dance moves, Rose with her melodic voice, Jennie with the fierce rap and Jisoo with her outstanding visuals make the band one of a kind. One of the great things about their performances is that they all have a captivating presence on the stage. 

It would be a dream to watch them perform live in front of you. It would not be wrong to say that Indian Blinks are waiting for them to be here. It is about to be around two years that the group has not released a song together. So many people around the world are waiting for them to be back on stage. And it is for sure that many records would be broken, and many stages would be set to fire. Waiting for them eagerly, till then let’s keep supporting.
