Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for playing the beloved character Hagrid in the Harry Potter series written by J.K. Rowling, died at the age of 72 on 14 October 2022.

The actor's agent Belinda Wright reported that he died Friday at a hospital in Scotland although she did not reveal the cause of his death. In her statement about his death, Belinda Wright seemed almost heartbroken when she spoke of Robbie as not only a wonderful actor but also forensically intelligent and brilliantly witty. She had been employed as his agent for 40 long years.

How Robbie Rose to Fame

The world-famous Hagrid Actor started his career appearing alongside Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Emma Thompson, who were also near and dear friends of his in the sketch series Alfresco which ran through the years 1983–1984. In 1987, he starred in the BBC miniseries Tutti Frutti alongside Thompson, for which he received his first British Academy Television Award for Best Actor nomination.

Robbie Coltrane first rose to fame in the 1990s when he was introduced to television as a hard-bitten detective in Cracker. For his performance on the show, he won the best actor award at the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA) three years running.

He then found worldwide recognition as Rubeus Hagrid in the film adaptation of JK Rowling's beloved and bestselling Harry Potter series. He played the gentle half-giant, who acts as a mentor and friend to the boy wizard, Harry Potter and his friends in all eight Harry Potter films, released between 2001 and 2011.

Robbie was appointed an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2006 New Year Honors by Queen Elizabeth II for his remarkable services to the field of drama. In 1990, he received the Evening Standard British Film Award – Peter Sellers Award for Comedy. In 2011, he was honoured for his "outstanding contribution" to film at the British Academy Scotland Awards.

The World of Harry Potter

Robbie Coltrane played the much-beloved character of Rubeus Hagrid, who is a big-hearted giant in the books as well as the movie adaptations of the children’s fantasy Harry Potter series penned down by J.K. Rowling.

His career began long before the first Harry Potter movie premiered way back in 2001, but for the generation that grew up with the films and the books, it is difficult for them to separate the Scottish actor from his larger-than-life (at least for muggles) portrayal of Rubeus Hagrid, the official keeper of the keys and grounds at Hogwarts.

Canadian actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played the role of the central character Harry potter, British actor Emma Watson, who plays the wisest muggle-born Hermione Granger, Tom Felton, who plays the Slytherin bad boy Draco Malfoy, Matthew Lewis, who played the role of innocent Neville Longbottom in the films and other actors who were just children when they filmed with Coltrane remember their Hagrid in real life as a fun presence and caring influence during their formative years during their shoot for the franchise.

Emma Watson remembers  Coltrane for his compassion and the impact he had on her while they were filming for the eight films. She also mentions that his talent was so immense that it made sense to them he played a giant so much so because he filled any place he moved about with his great brilliance.

Daniel Radcliffe also commented on his sad demise and said that he felt extremely lucky to have worked with Robbie who was an incredible actor as well as a lovely gentleman.

Tom Felton, whose character Draco Malfoy was often the rival of Harry Potter, spoke of how Robbie and Hagrid were more alike in how they cared for others. He further reminisces about his fondest memories on the Harry Potter set and mentions that during a night shoot scene in the forbidden forest, Robbie cared for and looked after all the actors around him. He used to make everybody laugh and made sure they had a lovely time while shooting scenes.

Conclusion

The muggle world seemed to have truly lost a wizard, who took great pride in safeguarding the wizarding world. Robbie will be missed by his family and friends from the film industry but will forever live on in the hearts of every dreamer as the half-giant Hagrid.
