Book Review: "Terms And Conditions" By Lauren Asher

Introduction

Book Name: Terms And Conditions
Author: Lauren Asher
Language: English
Genre: Friction

Author

Lauren, who has a self-diagnosed overactive imagination, reads and writes in her spare time. Her ultimate goal is to visit every location she writes about. She likes to create lovable but flawed characters in her stories. She enjoys telling frantic tales that span the emotional spectrum and are filled with angst and steam.

She spends her free time watching YouTube, binge-watching Parks and Recreation, and looking up new restaurants on Yelp before settling on her tried-and-true favourite. After her morning coffee, she works best, and she will never say no to a nap.

Plot

Declan:

I'm destined to succeed my family's media empire's current CEO.
The sole issue? The inheritance provision of my grandfather.
Before my assistant offered to take on the task, it seemed impossible for him to realise his dying wish of getting married and producing an heir.
My biggest issue was supposed to be resolved by our marriage.
I'm less sure about our contract, though, the more we behave as though we love the public.

Being concerned for Iris was never a requirement, especially not when it is inevitable that she will lose her heart.

Iris:

In theory, my plan to wed Declan was straightforward.

Together, move in. Organise a wedding. Birth a child.

We established rules to stop any problems.
No matter how much Declan tempts me, they are ones that were never meant to be broken.

But what occurs when our fictitious relationship spills over into our actual one?

It was never an option to fall in love.
Not for me, at any rate.

Personal Review

Angry boss with more complicated emotions than he wants to acknowledge? Please, I say. The story reminded me of the Spanish Love Deception/Love Hypothesis, and that's honestly one of the highest compliments I can currently pay for a book. I absolutely LOVED my first experience with this new-to-me author's work.

I was hooked the entire time I was reading this slow-burning love story, and I adored how this couple interacted with one another. The typical moody, brooding billionaire that our hero is, he only has a marshmallow heart for one girl.

Iris, his assistant, is the only person who has remained by his side throughout his recent period of grumpy demands. Recently, I've been enjoying marriage-of-convenience romances and this one in particular

The protagonist of the story is Iris, a woman whose employer doesn't always value her diligence. Everyone's a little surprised that she has lasted this long considering that she has been working for Declan for the past three years. Even the marriage of convenience Iris arranged for Declan ended up falling through at the last minute.

The most significant aspect of Declan's life is his job, and he needed that marriage to make things work. So what does this outstanding worker do? Of course, offer to wed her boss. Even though they may not get along well, they have gotten to know one another over the years, and on paper, a marriage can't be all that bad. However, things quickly seem more genuine than expected, and soon enough Declan and Iris soon have completely new perspectives on one another.

This makes use of a number of clichés, such as enemies to lovers, age gap (24/36), office romance, the marriage of convenience, and grumpy/sunny, but it still feels new and exciting. I adored both the original, swoon-worthy vibes and the tropey goodness, and I was cheering for this unlikely couple from the very start.

It was fascinating to watch the sexual tension grow between them because their relationship has an ease that contrasts sharply with their frequent arguments. In many ways, it's a slow burn, but you can tell that feelings go deeper than either of these commitment-phobic people will admit.

It was amusing and lighthearted one minute, a little angsty the next, tension-filled - and endlessly compelling to watch them try to get it right. I might be reading the author's work for the first time, but I won't be the last to do so. Looking forward to the next book in this series of connected standalone.
