Planning a trip is an arduous job, especially when it comes to packing your entire house in 1 to 2 suitcases. Imagine having to plan a long stay somewhere away from home, it is a deadpan situation.

Being away from travel purposes and being away to stay in a hostel are two entirely different entities.

When you check in at a hotel, you are provided with essentials as a complimentary by the hotel. However, this is not the case when you are moving out from the home to live in a hostel/Pg.

I know many of you are breaking your head and sitting puzzled deciding what to carry and what to not. So here I am to your rescue to save you from your mind mess.

This article addresses all your concern concerning the hostel checklist.

Hostel Checklist

Now, this is something very basic and the most crucial step for any preparations. Having a checklist always comes in handy. Here is the list.

1. Bedsheet

One of the most essential items on your list. 99.9% of the hostels do not provide bedsheets and bedspread.  Also, it is advised to carry your bedsheets from home for hygiene purposes.

And don’t forget your pillow in case they do not provide one.

2. Toiletries

Toiletries are something that you should and you must invest your time and energy in sorting out. Because this is something that is everything. You cannot borrow from friends. (especially with soaps and toothbrushes)

Have a medium to large size of pouch depending on the items you want to carry in it.

What should be there in the pouch?

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Bodywash/ Soap
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • Lotion
  • Sunscreen and moisturizer
  • Facewash
  • Sanitiser
  • Wet wipes
  • Venus Razor
  • Feminine products
  • Detergent

3. Garments

Match your outfits before keeping them in the suitcases. I’m sure you don’t want to sit blunt and face a wardrobe disaster on the first day of college.

Make sure you are carrying a good set of jeans and comfy pants. Jeans are women's best friend. You can pair it with any random top when you are confused and not able to find the matching bottom.

Keep baggy t-shirts and night dresses to make yourself utmost comfortable, and also to avoid sweating in summer. Have a separate pouch for your undergarments sets to prevent misplacing them.

Carry your towel.

4. Lock and key

Safeguarding your belongings is a significant responsibility that comes with hostel life. Being responsible for all your actions is a lesson which you will be taught in this stage.

Carry your lock and key. Lock your room every time you leave for lectures or outings. Nobody is answerable for your loss because of your negligence.

5. Eye mask

When you are sharing the room with your roommates, you are expected to adjust to the environment.

If your roommate is a night owl and you are opposite from her in terms of sleeping habits. It is better to adjust instead of making a scene.

Grab your eye mask and wear it on, and embrace sleep. This is how you can save your energy from an argument. Also wearing an eye mask can ensure good and tight sleep.

6. Flip Flop

Flip Flop slippers are the comfiest slippers. Usually, we pack our outdoor slippers and tend to forget about indoor wear, especially when we have to roam inside the hostel.

They are super light wear, giving you a homely feeling.

7. Torch

I know many of you must be wondering why should I even carry a torch. Wouldn't be overboard.

Well, no.

You might never know when you require it. Having a mini torch always comes in handy.

If there is a power cut or you want to search for something at night without disturbing the sleep of others, make use of a torch.

8. Containers and snacks

Containers from homes give a homely vibe. Packed snacks and pickles from home can save you from going to sleep on an empty stomach.

Also storing other small items and handing your friends the dabbas to get some home-cooked meals is a heavenly feeling.

9. Medicines

Sickness is something which you cannot foresee. it is not in your hands but what is in your hand is to take the necessary precautions.

Basic meds like paracetamol and a first aid kit are a must to carry. You cannot always rely on the medical centre.

God forbids if you are experiencing any specific health issues or allergies make sure you are carrying the prescribed meds with you. It is difficult to search for a doctor or medicines if your health worsens at late hours.

10. Cables

Carrying adapters (universal adapters) is a smart choice for all individuals. Not all the hostels have the facility for all types of pins.

Prepare a separate pouch for all the electronic equipment.
