7 Most Interesting Places in & Around Mangalore

Mangalore is a small city in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada. This city is surrounded by beautiful beaches & rivers, scenic mountains, and lush greenery around. The blend of cultures from different regions of the Mangalore globe makes this place more interesting to view. In this article, I am going to present some of the best seven places I have visited in Mangalore.

1.     Pilikula Zoo

This zoo extends across 400 acres of land. This park is open between 10 AM -5 PM with a weekly holiday on Monday. It houses several animals ranging from mammals, reptiles, birds, etc. This zoo is an excellent place to visit with your families & friends. There are a lot of species which includes those from India, Africa, other parts of Asia, and other nations as well. This zoo is the only zoo in Mangalore and is surrounded by a water park, planetarium, science center, and many other places. The entry fee is rupees 80 for adults and rupees 50 for children.

2.     Manasa Water Amusement Park

Manasa Water Amusement Park is situated exactly opposite the zoo. The entry fee in it is rupees 400, but you may find some reductions in the fees based on some criteria given on the website. The water in the pools is very low but still, it has some amazing and breathtaking water rides from simple rides to wave rides & free fall, from individual rides to double seater rides and even rides. The timings are between 10 AM-5 PM. The water park has a dress changing room along with lockers for which we have to pay some rent to keep our things in the lockers. It has an attached bathroom and toilet. This is the only water park in Mangalore. I would rate this place 2.5/5.

3.     Panambur Beach

Now anyone who has already visited beaches might not find this place very interesting but this place is a good place to visit as it is close to nature, thus those who are tired of stressful life can come here and admire nature to its fullest. The beach has a few food stalls. It is about two kilometers away from NH 66. The beach is usually occupied by many people, with several tourists visiting the beach. There are a few water sports for people to make their time at the beach more memorable. They can even sit peacefully on the sands and admire the scenic beauty. This place is surely one to be visited if you are a traveler.

4.     St. Aloysius Chapel

The chapel was built by the Jesuits in the year 1890 and painted by Bro. Moscheni in 1899. The paintings in the chapel depict the life of Jesus Christ, the life of St. Aloysius of Gonzaga, many other Jesuit saints, and many biblical scriptures. It is a very peaceful place to pray & meditate and also to be in a state of peace. Many visitors and pilgrims flock to this chapel and there is a chapel guide who gives a depth of detail about the chapel and everything inside it. There are two types of paintings in the chapel: fresco and canvas. The work of restoration of these paintings was done by specialists of INTACH from 1991 to 1994 under the guidance of Dr. Om Prakash Agrawal.

5.     St. Lawrence Minor Basilica, Attur Karkala

This church was built in the 18th century. This church is known for many miracles and thus is no less than a shrine. It is believed that St. Lawrence himself chose that spot to build the church. Pope Francis elevated the shrine to the status of a minor basilica on April 26, 2016. This is the 2nd basilica in Karnataka with St. Mary’s Basilica, Bangalore being the first. Every year many pilgrims & tourists visit this shrine. Every year the annual parish feast is celebrated in January (22nd -26th January 2023), during which many stalls are set up, many devotees visit this church and it is a grand celebration with several holy masses & special prayers throughout the day and also many stalls put up outside the church premises. The feast is popularly known as the Attur feast.

6.     Adyar falls & Valachil point

This is one of the most beautiful scenic places that one must visit. From the Valachil bus stop, one must arrange for a vehicle(if you have reached there by public transport) to climb up the mountain and reach the top. That place is called the Valachil viewpoint. From there the view of Netravati river & several other places is seen. It is a wonderful experience. One must walk towards the Adyar falls from there. Adyar falls is a small waterfall, but many people come here to take bath & have some fun as it is a wonderful place to spend time with loved ones. It is also a good alternative to a beach.

7.     Tannirbhavi Beach

This beach is the closest to my location compared to all the other beaches. It is possible to reach there by bus or roadways and also by ferry from Sulthan Batthery. This beach is very clean and not much visited, unlike Panambur beach. Thus the beach is very silent and peaceful. There are no stalls there. This beach is a good place to visit.
