Buckle up crime thriller lovers there came a new movie on 17 March 2023 which is ‘Boston Strangler’. So, how is it? Here before the original review, I want to talk about one of the most underrated actresses Keira Christina Knightley better known as Keira Knightley. She is an English actress who is famous for her performance in some of the best Hollywood movies of the century like ‘Pride and Prejudice’ (2005), ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ (2003), ‘The Imitation Game’ (2014), ‘Love Actually’ (2003), etc. This promising actress appears in many independent films along with blockbusters and dramas.
Keira always amazed us with her performance on the screen. Whether it is a rom-com, thriller or fantasy drama, or action, she always seems spontaneous and natural in playing any character. She got nominated for Academy Awards (2006 and 2015) and also won BAFTA awards two consecutive (2008, and 2015) times as the best actress. So, we can get a proper understanding of how incredible she is with her work. Now, you may think, why am I talking so much about Keira Knightly? It is because she again spellbound me in the ‘Boston Strangler’ in the lead role of a journalist.
Plot Summary of the Movie
The storyline and plot of ‘Boston Strangler’ were written by Matt Ruskin and he directed the movie as well. This 20th Century Studios-produced crime thriller will not disappoint you while you will watch this film. The movie revolves around the murders of widows and single young women who live alone in the city of Boston by a notorious criminal in the early 1960s.
The murderer brutally killed the women one after another but the police were not able to do anything to catch him. Then a female reporter Loretta McLaughlin (played by Keira Knightley) came forward to write a story on the murders and through her thorough investigation she proved that the murders were connected because all of the victims were tied with a bow on their necks. So young Loretta with the help of another female journalist Jean Cole (played by Carrie Coon) started to find the clues to solve the mystery.
Now are they successful in their mission or not? To know that you have to watch the film.
Observations & Remarks
Spectacular Cinematography
The movie was set in the 1960s and with amazing cinematography and set design, it takes you back to the time. Also, as a thriller movie, most shots were taken in a static mode and low-key light. But the angles and actions of the characters looked sharp in the movie. Ben Kutchins undoubtedly did an amazing job with the camera.
Superb Screen Presence
Every character used in this movie seems flawless and perfect for their roles. Keira Knightley is awesome as Loretta McLaughlin. She never seems off-beat or incompetent as a protagonist. There are very few movies in history where an actress led the story but Keira did that beautifully.
Sexism and Gender Discrimination
The movie portrays sexism and gender discrimination between men and women in 1960s America. How women were always forced to be a homemaker and had never been considered equal to men, and the movie depicted that nicely. Women always had to fight for getting a better job or a good position in the patriarchal society.
Outstanding Storyline
The outstanding storyline of this movie makes it a great crime thriller released this year. Sometimes it might seem slow because of many events happening together at the same time but you will not get bored of this movie.
The movie got a 6.5 IMDb rating out of 10 and 63% rotten tomatoes on google. It proves that the movie is an average one. But I can tell you that you will enjoy the performance of Keira Knightley. She is the backbone of this crime thriller. So, overall this a one-time watch movie that you can enjoy this weekend with your family and friends. But again Keira is incredible and just for her to binge-watch this.
