Plot
Haikyu!! is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. The story follows Shoyo Hinata who is obsessed with playing volleyball despite his short height.
This determination came after he saw Karasuno High School playing Nationals on TV. He is inspired by a short height spiker who was popular with the name “The Little Giant ''.
Hinata is an enthusiastic and athletic player. His high jumps are commendable.
During his junior high school, he convinced his friends and many other players to play volleyball with him but no one agreed. In his last year, some of his friends finally agreed and after some practice they played a tournament where they were brutally defeated by the other team. The other team included Tobio Kageyama also known as “King of the court ” for his skills and cruel playing style.
He was in the same year as Hinata.
After graduating from junior high, these two competitors met again but now as teammates. They both joined Karasuno High School’ volleyball team. The good days of Karasuno were missing after the era of The Little Giant.
They were then often called the “The wingless crow”.
However, the scenario changed after the admission of the newbies. The combination of Hinata’s athletic skills and Kageyama’s setting skills, the duo developed a new explosive volleyball technique.
This competitive nature of theirs helped them to grow to their full potential. The Karasuna’s team tries their best to restore their reputation and make it to Nationals.
Both Hinata and Kageyama vow to become professional volleyball players and promised each other to play volleyball on the same court even after they graduate.
Characters
Shoyo Hinata is a first year student at Karasuno High School and a protagonist. He lacks the knowledge to become a good volleyball player. However, when he joins Karasuno, he experiences playing in a real volleyball team for the first time.
He is currently a middle spiker with jersey number 10, which is the same as of “The Little Giant” from Karasuno. Despite his short height, he is well appreciated by his teammates and rivals for his amazing stamina, vertical jump and commendable reflexes. He wants to become the ace of his team, but for his betterment he is given the role of a decoy. Even though
he doesn’t enjoy being a decoy, he still tries to give his best and gains the nickname “the greatest decoy”. Hinata never loses hope. He is incredibly devoted towards volleyball and practices tirelessly, leading to his rapid growth as player.
Tobio Kageyama is a first year student at Karasuno High School. He is well known as “the king of the court” for his dominating nature on court and playing style. During one of his matches, his desire to win with his lack of regards about the needs of teammates caused them to abandon him in the middle of the match.
He is now scared if the same thing happens in Karasuno, so he tries his best to adjust with the players and suppress his dominating nature. At Karasuno he not only learns volleyball skills but also about trust, respect and teamwork. He explores his volleyball skills with the help of Hinata. He is one of the finest setters.
He can set the ball for any spiker at any situation making him famous for his pinpoint setting accuracy. He has poor social skills and is always fighting with Hinata.
My View
I personally consider this anime as a masterpiece. It is one of my favourite sports anime. What is love about it is how intense yet funny this anime is. It carries both the elements so perfectly and the balance is great. I enjoyed every episode of it.
It is true that Hinata and Kageyama are the main characters but the side characters are nothing less. The other teammates and also the rival teammate have some of the best characters. My favourite one would be Toru Oikawa.
His calm and composed nature makes me like him. He is from the rival team yet his skills are just wow. The best thing is his serve and the hooding when he serves gives goosebumps to me. He has a pretty good physique.
We can learn from every character as they are all diverse and teach us about life. Hinata taught me how to pursue your dream regardless of your insecurities.
Kageyama taught me it is important to adjust according to the environment and learn from your past mistakes. The whole Karasuno team taught me how to overcome the past casualties and try my best to be the best.
Overall, it is worth watching anime, you will enjoy every moment, every character and also learn more about volleyball.
